In the passage by American journalist, Robert Krulwich, “What happened On Easter Island- A New (Even Scarier) Scenario,” represses the idea that many believed about the Eastern Island. In which the inhabitants brought forward the destruction of the island by deforestation, or how Jared Diamond calls it, ecocide. Mr. Krulwich begins with the old story that everyone believes, and gradually builds up on to a more scientific method of what happen to the island. He introduces several references throughout the passage, giving him more credibility and sharing more information with the reader in case they would like more evidence on the topic, aside from credibility standards, he divides the article into sections with sub tittles for an easier approach transitioning from section to section. With a chronological start, Mr. Krulwich introduces the “First version” or the history that everyone seems to know. Along with the help from a book, “Collapse” by Jared Diamond, he establishes the sense of how the history everyone knows about the island, could be possible. From the first settlers that started the deadly destruction of the trees and plant life by burning them to how the island had remarkable landmarks such as the Moai that “had been toppled and laid in abject defeat.” Stating how the once beautiful …show more content…
Changing his references, he brings up the argument from two anthropologist, Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo, in which the story of the inhabitants is more positive than we normally believed. The new report develops around the fact that there were no remains of the first Polynesians bringing their doom upon themselves. Instead mother nature brought forward a plague of rats that infected the trees. Not focusing on the problem, the population somehow adapted to their new environment. Eating the rats and surviving with what resources were available, they managed to endure the
The lorax and Easter Island (Polynesians) The Lorax by Dr.Seuss is a fictional story and the story Easters End is not. The Lorax has many messages about how if we are not careful we will soon be in a similar situation and also tells shows what shape are enviroment is in society by showing: Pollution both land and water, overpopulation, and having all the trees cut down. The sotry of the Polynesians show what is going to happen if we dont learn from their past and the mistakes they've made. The Polynesian people would make big statues made of stone and put them on platforms and they used many trees to make what they needed to move the statues. In The Lorax they used the Truffela tree to use as a resource for their product "the thneed"
His way of doing this was he began by giving the reader a description of the island in a geographical way. Although in the book he does not provide a topical map for us to reflect on, he instead gives us an image of the first map that was ever documented of the island. He then tries to portray a picture showing how the island was initially formed, as well as how the very first explorers and Native Americans that founded the island may have seen it through their eyes. The way that McComb decided to do this in his book to me was an appropriate technique since McComb said that a shipwrecked Spaniards were some of the first individual to acquire the island.
Many interactions between man and nature are put into stories to give a message that humans must treat nature with care so, other generations can survive and follow or it will be destroyed. In both the Lorax and Easter’s End these actions are portrayed, however Easter’s end’s story shows us this interaction in reality, while The Lorax is fiction. In both stories they portray the same scenario, people find new land and use up all the resources which explains the theory of Tragedy
“The Lorax” is a popular children’s book written by Dr. Seuss, but did you know that is has a special meaning? Easter Island is famously known for its large statues, but did you know that it once had a population of nearly twelve thousand people? Both “The Lorax” and Easter Island were both affected by the effects of humans destroying the environment. In “The Lorax”, the Once-ler discovered land that appeared to have never been disturbed by humans before.
Due to the decrease of Polynesians and the increase of Europeans, the chances
In his memory, it is a small, boring place enveloped by the darkness of death. (A woman died in the only lake on the island and her corpse disappeared.) As a result, he leaves as soon as he gets the opportunity. Mandel creates Arthur’s thoughts on leaving to reflect some people’s inner feelings in this busy world. The tedious daily life eliminates passions for pursuing futures.
In all, I think this book was an excellent use of my time. This book brings the reader into an uncommon awareness of the changes in the environment and ecosystem along the timeline of pre-Colonial and Colonial history usually learned in school. Mr. Cronon brilliantly linked Helms
Because Brower views the island differently than he views the mountain and the river, he is able to compromise on developing the island without going against his philosophy, unlike he would if compromising on mining the mountain or adding dams to the river. McPhee’s use of the principle of narrative completeness with the Sierra Club cup helps to explain to readers why the degree of conservation that Brower is preaching is less on the
This island has no adults, no civilization, and no rules, making it seemingly perfect for a group of young boys. The boys’ adventures are full of insanity, fun, and fear. The plot of this
In the two stories “The lorax” and “Easter Island” there are lots of differences and similarities. Both stories have environmental issues dealing with trees and air quality. The environment in each story became a wasteland and was eventually polluted by trash. Once-ler in the lorax story and the Polynesians in the Easter island story tried to protect the environment but both failed to do so, all natural resources were lost and everything went downhill from there. First, in “The lorax” an environmental issue was the air quality.
As Jack’s moral character deteriorates, it brings his savagery to the surface, allowing the remnants of civilization to be forgotten. In the beginning of the novel, a group of young boys find themselves alone, without any adults, on an island after
The setting on the island in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is essential to the plot. For instance, the island is necessary to the plot because if it is not an island then it would change the story completely. General Zaroff is smart enough to find a secret island to chase and catch his prey. Once they get on the island, they are trapped. Rainsford knew that once General Zaroff is out to get him “ He was in a picture with a frame of water, and his only operations, clearly must take place within that frame” (11).
While the native peoples of new world were being ravaged by diseases the
The book starts being narrated by a man named Edward Prendick, shipwrecked in the ocean . A boat that passes takes him aboard, and a doctor named Montgomery revives him. He explains to Prendick that they go to an island without name where he works, and on board there are animals that travel with the. When they arrive at the island both the captain of the ship and the doctor Montgomery refuse to take Prendick with them, with the stand ship crew puts it on a lifeboat to abandon it, then they feel guilt and shame and return by the. After a few days, Montgomery presented to Doctor Moreau, a cold and precise man who conducts research on the island.
In the book The Lord of the Flies we can see that many conflicts happen while the kids are in the island, most of these conflicts are struggled to be solved. The main conflict and the one that I 'm going to be talking about is the conflict between Ralph and Jack, were both boys compete for power. Ralph is more civilized and tries to make a fire and build tents while Jack is more of a savage who uses violence and wants to hunt all the time. Its is easy to see that in this literary piece the author uses many conflicts to make the reader visualize wants happening in the island. Ralph is voted by the boys to be the leader of the group, in the book he represents leadership, civilization and order.
