The lessons that I’ve learned throughout the course made me more confident when assisting job seekers and students with selecting their prospective careers. From the very beginning, this course has taught me how to use my available resources when assisting with career choices. Those resourceful tools include the Occupational Outlook Handbook and Fastweb. With these tools, I learned out to effectively select a career, outline the expected job vacancy, find funding for secondary education, and access scholarship opportunities. During the group presentations, I learned about the foundations of career development, ethic and legal guidelines, assessments, and how to prepare for work; as well as how to effectively counsel in business settings and private practices. I enjoyed how we were able to work as a team to effectively teach our sections. Also, I enjoyed the personal experiences that were shared in the class. It helped give a personally perspective to the situations that we will face as career counselors. I was infatuated when I learned how to open my own private practice. It never crossed my mind before but now this will be a long term goal of mine. …show more content…
First, my goal is to help those that I know who are struggling to find a job or career of their liking. With the encouragement, I’m sure I’ll be able to positively assist with ending their job search. After completing my degree here at Norfolk State University and hired into my new profession as a school counselor, I plan start or perfect the career focused fairs/seminars and also hopefully serve as the career counselor at the school or serve as an assistant if someone already has that role. I want to provide the same about of resources for careers as there are for attending
I learned a lot about myself. I learned what my strengths and weakness are and how to manage and improve them. Hopefully, I can take this motivation and carry out my workout routine through the end of Freshman year and beyond, to improve myself physically and
Before this class I had never watched or heard of the film The Hunting Ground. I immediately downloaded Lady Gaga’s song to my phone. I felt I learned the most from this unit as well as feeling the most connected to what we were talking about in class. The film taught me that sexual assault on campuses is more common than I thought as well as less reported than I thought. It was shocking to learn of how colleges had ways of protecting a lot of the accused offenders, for example the athletes or fraternities.
I liked how I was able to assist student to make poster on bullying. It was fantastic experience to help students in class to come up with ideas on how they can serve through different ways
When it comes to this semester, things for me are going well. So far in the course, I have been able to get all my homework and reading entirely on time and not rushing things at the last minute. This week nine discussion I thought gave us a chance to showcase what well learned on the aspects of resume building and higher education career development for individuals. A lot of the information of have learned from week nine will assist in my research into the final project for this course. Learning about the news about career counseling in setting in scenes like elementary, high school to higher education’s makes us focus on the individual and what they want their future to look like.
I do not know for certain what my future holds, so it’s important that I broaden my horizons, especially when it comes to skills that could be used for a career. I have no idea, as of right now, what I want to do when I’m older. So it’s important now more than ever that I expand my interests on as many different things as I can, so when it truly becomes time for me to pick a career plan, I won’t be narrowed down to a single topic. There are many individuals who out all their time in effort into one thing, like sports or acting, and then when that certain plan doesn’t work out, they have nothing else to fall back on. This is why I think it’s important to really reach out and learn a little bit of everything, so you have many different things to pick and
Another thing that I enjoyed was creating and voting on the shirt we will make for the end of the year. If I were to take this class over again, something I would do differently would be to involve myself more in the class. I feel as if I would have involved myself more, then I would have understood more. When studying, try to get rid of all distractions. If distractions are present, it takes away the motivation to finish what needs to be done.
Focus 2 Assignment – Reflection Upon completing the Focus 2 career assessment program, I am quite impressed at the quality of information it presents. It allowed me to not only look at careers that would fit my personality, but also those that take into consideration the fields I am already interested in. Also, as with any form of self-assessment, there were strengths and weaknesses that I did not expect based on how I feel I live my life currently. Beginning chronologically, the program had me complete two subjective, current measures of my professional career.
I admire how the students all showed interest and followed through with the course experiment. At first everyone was hesitant, not believing they could change their lives. The students later realized they could and were all willing

Henderson State University goes above and beyond for their students in order to help them succeed at
My goal is to become a college counselor. I want to guide students to their career paths, by helping them discover their own talents, self-interests, and limitations. With these tools, students will be able to utilize the resources around them. Also, I plan to give assistance to those students that are considered a minority and are the first generations going to college.
Career education programs are the primary method used for providing career development assistance to students. Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions. Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals with success and satisfaction. Students will also understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training, and the world of work. In addition, the program aim is to help students improve academic competence, graduate from high school, develop employability skills and implement a career plan and participate in a career pathway in preparing for post-secondary education and
I realized early in life that a man must work and provide for his family in ordered to be considered a real man. The three careers that I chose are a Probation Officer, Electrical Project Manager and Occupational Health and Safety Specialist. The careers that I selected will influence changes in people’s lives which is very important to me and will also help to provide a comfortable living for me and my family. I created a matrix chart to assist me in deciding which career best fits me according to multiple criteria; such as salary, benefits, location, growth and education. I also discussed the ethical issues and role technology plays in each selected career.
Throughout this course, I learned a lot about myself, my family, and my peers who are also enrolled in this course. Although I enjoyed this class, it was very challenging for me in the beginning. As I mentioned above, I come from a troubled family. It was challenging for me to share my own life. I was uncomfortable.
Like many kids in ninth and tenth grade, we didn’t know what we wanted to do after high school, or what career we wanted to pursue. For me, I took one class that lead me to a series of classes that put me on the path that I am walking down today. The class I took was Architectural Drawing & Design (AD&D), which pushed me down the path of Career/Technical Education (CTE) classes. These classes gave helped me launch the call to adventure and later prepared me to cross the threshold, steps in the hero’s journey that I am on. Along the way of preparation, I meet two mentors that really molded me to what I have become today.
