A War by Another Name A Fractured Union would be a better name for the American Civil War. This name demonstrates that the main cause of the war was run away slaves, Lincoln’s election and the Emancipation Proclamation. A Fractured Union would be a better name for the Civil War because the Union used to be made of the North and the South but then it split. It split between the North and the South states; between states that support slavery and states that are against slavery. This would be a better name for the Civil War because of the slaves that would escape the South and go to the North. The escaped slaves caused a lot of problems between the North and the South because they caused the Fugitive Slave Act to be created. When the Fugitive Slave Act was created it caused many conflicts between the North and the South. Since most of the abolitionist lived in the North when the Fugitive Slave Act was created it made it hard for Northerners to follow the law. Many …show more content…

It also caused the South to come to the North and take any colored person and say that they were runaway slaves and the slaves were denied a trial because the weren’t considered persons but property. There are many events that prove that a Fractured Union would be a better name for the Civil War. For example, Lincoln’s election and the 1860 presidential race showed just how much the union was divided. Lincoln’s opposition was divided into three ways so he won the elections.
