Eastmouth

What is a home and when do you know you are home? A home is in the dictionary described as the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household, but in reality it is hard to describe what a home is.

The protagonist of the short story “Eastmouth” by Alison Moore is a girl called Sonia. Sonia is with her boyfriend, Peter, visiting his hometown of Eastmouth. Peter likes to be back home in the little village at the south coast of England, he likes to be back and hear the sound of the gulls. Sonia on the other hand does not like the sound of the seagulls, she is used to the Midlands and to city life. Sonia is a free-spirited woman, who wears a brightly coloured jacket. Sonia actually thinks that Eastmouth is a boring and quiet town where nothing changes, witch, funny enough, is what her boyfriend Peter loves about the town.
Sonia is not panning on staying long in Eastmouth, she has actually applied for a job up north and gave them the number to Peter’s parent’s home, so she could hear whether or not not she got the job. Sonia wants to travel and experience the world, she wants to visit Las Vegas and see the lights, she is a big-city girl.

They are not supposed to settle down to early and they are not supposed to settle down to late, a place between early and late is “the happy medium”.

Alison Moore tells a story about what happens when you grow older, you have finished your education and is supposed to move on. What are you supposed to do? Shall you follow your dreams, or shall you follow your spouse’s dreams? Shall you settle down or move on? A lot happens when you grow older and become an adult, you now have responsibilities you did not have before and the people you know have high expectations for you. You have to make a home for yourself, but in reality it is hard to describe what a home
