Natural Disasters
Natural disaster is not a new phenomenon to us here in the B.V.I. in fact we live on the impending threat of earthquakes and tsunamis. We also have to prepare annually for the Atlantic hurricane season, which starts from June 1st through November 30th. While we are luckily only privy to these, natural disaster covers much more. The Red Cross Society defines Natural Disaster as: “naturally occurring physical phenomena caused either by rapid or slow onset events which can be geophysical (earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis and volcanic activity), hydrological (avalanches and floods), climatological (extreme temperatures, drought and wildfires), meteorological (cyclones and storms/wave surges) or biological (disease epidemics and insect/animal plagues).” While this definition may sound very technical, the actual effects of these disasters can be …show more content…

The tropical storms Erika and Grace brought some serious hardship to the island of Dominica. While the presence and magnitude of the storm was publicized widely no one could have been thoroughly prepared for streets turning into violent rivers overnight and buildings washing away in the streets, or cars pile on top of each other mixed with thick buildup of mud. It was so bad that other islands started to make cooperation and effort to help the island of Dominican to relief from the catastrophe that the tropical storms caused to their agricultural, roads, bridges, power utilities and health and school system after its passage. One of those islands is the British Virgin Islands, according to BVI news online “The British Virgin Islands will be sending healthcare workers and disaster management personnel to the Commonwealth of Dominica to assist with relief efforts following the August 27 passage of the deadly Tropical Storm Erika which severely affected the Caribbean island.” (BVI
