Chief Joseph was a great exponent of Indian culture for respect for life, Earth and men 's laws, and perceived Anglo Americans as liers. On his letter, he evokes the sadness of too many chiefs whose word is not presided by actions committed on those their promises. He writes: "I cannot understand why so many chiefs are allowed to talk so many different ways, and promise so many different things." I would have done the same thing as Chief Joseph, fight for what is right. This land was first inhabited by Indians and it was their right to fight for productive lands with water to be able to survive and grow their communities. Instead, Anglo used the law to persecute, diminish, and exterminate the first American land settlements. Chief Joseph
