Into the Wild
In Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into the Wild , he depicts the story of Chris McCandless and his journey as “Alex Supertramp” across the United States, starting in Georgia and ending with the his death in Alaska. Jon states his argument that Chris wasn’t “stupid, tragic, and inconsiderate” and he tell the story of a young man with a profound moral compass and wants to seek higher truth.
In the novel, Chris left to go into the wilderness right after he graduated from college. He did not let his parents know he was leaving for many reasons. Chris’s anger towards his father that made him want to travel away from Walt McCandless was that he had a completely other family that he was supporting and keeping it a secret from the whole family. In Chapter 7 in the book it states, “I'm

He indicates that his journey was as vigorous as Chris’s was to Alaska. In Peter Christian’s Criticism of McCandless, he states, ”... most people who make is as far as Alaska never get past the cities of Fairbanks and Anchorage because access is so difficult and expensive...” Peter Christian says it is impossible to get into the wild financially, however, Chris made it to the wilderness with really no money in his pocket and that was his choice to have nothing. According to the article Why the Teen Brain is Drawn to Risk, ” We come into the world with limited knowledge about what kind consequences we will experience…” Regardless if Chris knew he was going to come out of the wilderness alive, he would have changed something he did wrong. He would have learned how to preserve meat and he would not have eaten the seeds. Everyone makes mistakes, but his was a big mistake that can’t be changed. Chris did not know he was going to die when he stepped foot into the Alaskan Frontier. One simple mistake can ruin your life and that plant is what ended Chris’s and it was not his fault that he didn’t know the plant was
With all the information gathered, I believe that Chris made a mistake of going out into the Alaskan wilderness because he lacked supplies, didn't have enough knowledge of our natural survival, and he didn't have a map. One of the largest reasons Chris’s adventure turned fatal was because he lacked supplies like food. Hence
One part that may have lead Chris McCandless to leave could have been because of his parents. He had never really had the best relationship with them, because they shared completely different beliefs and ideals on topics like money and freedom. In a letter to
there was other ways to get close to life and experience such an empowering environment. their several things chris should have done to avoid his very own death, if he really wanted to. One thing for sure he could've left a note to let his parents know, but now there's a problem with that, he probably didn't want to leave a note because he didn't want anyone to worry about him. he wanted to experience his journey by himself with no worries of anybody trying to find him or just anyone to even worry about him, but i don't think he should've taken this route as much as he didn't want to be found i don't think he would've been either way, the least he could've done was stop everyone's worrying by saying something at least maybe a call when he was out in his journey. with that said he was successful at not being apart of
Respect is very important to Chris, though it is apparent that Chris wanted to be absolutely clear to his parents that they did not have his respect. A short time before Chris vanished from his family’s sight, he wrote to Carine saying that he would “be through with them[his parents] once and for all, forever”(64). The very fact that he knew exactly what he was doing and was not apologetic in the slightest proves that he was quite selfish in terms of his parents as he never looked back. He wanted to escape the life that his parents desperately wanted so that he very carefully calculate his disappearance. Billie McCandless(Chris’s mother) informed Krakauer that Chris had instructed the post office to hold them until August 1, apparently so we wouldn’t know anything was up” (22) When Bille speaks of “them:” she was referencing the numerous letters that her and Walt sent to Chris during the entire summer after Chris graduated from Emory.
“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from outside encounters with new experiences.” - Chris McCandless Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer is a National best seller book about a young adult male named Chris McCandless also known as Alexander Supertramp. Chris walked into the wilderness of Alaska, alone. He had no plans of where to go or what he was going to do he just went.
“ rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth”(117). Chris couldn’t live with the anger he had towards his father and on top of that feeling like a hypocrite when he would talk to him. McCandless wasn’t interested in having materialistic things he wanted to separate from society and their beliefs and do what he wanted to do. All of these circumstances swayed him to searched the wild to find what it was really like. Chris was not crazy, he died tragically to simply try to find order to his imperfect life he was a serious
In the opinion of Shaun Callahan she states that Chris’s mindset was,”brilliant and ignorant”. Which made her believe that his death was caused by his actions and concept of thinking. Also as to seeing his life having many hardships he endured, the reader sees that his foolish ways drove him to die in the first place. Which can be seen as his up bringing of childhood lifestyle, countless people who cared, but he was quick to ignore and his ignorance of letting himself die in the wild, . Leading himself to the wilderness was somewhat caused by his reliance to prove a point.
In the book, “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless, who introduces himself as Alex, hitchhiked his way to Alaska. He embarked on an adventure to Alaska to get away from not only his family, but humanity in general to figure out how to escape from the life he did not enjoy. He decided to give up his life as a college graduate just to prove that not everyone needs materialistic things in order to live a happy life. With regard to that, he left his family behind without a notice of what his plans were going to be after he graduated. In my opinion on what provoked Chris McCandless to venture off into the wild was his philosophical beliefs to get out of society and the way his parents treated him built a dreadful relationship between them.
He wanted to go in there without really anything so that he can make things that were in the nature. “Chris didn’t think twice about risking his own life…”(Carine McCandless 128). I absolutely think that this quote about Chris is very true because he was so into finding new adventures to take, to enjoy and be happy with
Chris McCandless was a guy who thought it would be a brilliant idea to go out into the wilderness and live out there. He made many mistakes with living in the wilderness for starters he was very ill prepared, Chris did not bring enough food to survive and with that he had to find his own food. When Chris started to leave he decided he's going to get rid of all his money and so he burned some of it and gave the rest of the money to charity. Chris hunted little animals and then he killed a moose he ended up not preserving it correctly and he had to get rid of it because it became old and gross. For a guy to get a book and a movie written about his life and ultimate death, do you think that’s right?
An idea that played a big role throughout the book Into The Wild is the subtle line between hubris (excessive pride or self confidence) and deliberately living one’s life on the edge. Several Alaskans state that Chris McCandless brought about his own demise by going into the wild without sufficient respect for the wilderness. Others believe that Chris understood the risks he took and that he did so deliberately because he wished to push himself to the limits of his ability. The question would be which one is correct. The answer could be simple, and look for signs of hubris or deliberate risk, but depending on the parts of the book one looks at, one could say chris had a little bit of both.
When he decided to take on this adventure, he basically threw his life away. “In May 1990, Chris graduated from Emory University in Atlanta.”(20) He had a high school and college degree. Not many people with an education like that would drop their whole life to go risk it in the wild. “More than 24,000 dollars remained at the time of Chris’s graduation.”
I think he just wanted to pursue life in a different way. Chris was not seeing life the way anyone else was, so he decided to brush off into the wild and be free on his own. Though he did not survive, he was still a very bright, arrogant human being. Shaun Callarman states, “He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his Romantic silliness.” Chris knew going into the wild that he did not have much survival skills, but that did not stop him from doing what he wanted to do because he did not care about society and was just completely over everything which was why he made the move to the wilderness.
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer is a biography that follows Chris McCandless and his journey through the wilderness while finding himself along the way. Chris McCandless died in the August of 1992 after a four month journey through places like Mexico and Alaska. Krakauer investigates his actions and analyzes his identity after his death, trying to find meaning within his seemingly unnecessary expedition. Chris McCandless constructs his personal identity as a man who wanted to be challenged and inspired by his actions and interests with people he met on the road, and his beliefs and values as a stubborn person. Chris McCandless’s actions are unusual in many ways; for one, he graduates college with honors, but instead of pursuing a career,
Death. While the outcome is the same for everyone, no two people live the same lives. Ivan Ilych was a character in Leo Tolstoy 's novel The Death of Ivan Ilych. Ivan was a selfish lawer who was unhappy with his life until right before he died. Portrayed in the movie Into the Wild, Christopher McCandless was a free spirit he did what he want when he wanted.
