Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, and he died on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore. He was separated from his family and orphaned at the age of two; however, the tragic events caused him to become an excellent writer. Poe attended the University of Virginia, but he heavily drank and got into debt so he left the school. In 1831, Poe was expelled from the famous military academy, Westpoint.
