Also, in the movie/book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, we saw the author use symbolism to show us what was actually happening. In Night, Eliezer and his father are trying to survive the cataclysm that occurred to the Jewish population and the others in the camp. There were multiple examples of symbolism.
Rain is another Important topic within symbolism, in most stories rain can mean the Cleansing of a character, (similar to a baptism) but it can also mean the opposite. In a book “Among the Hidden” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, symbolism is used to create a powerful feeling with a place or thing. For example, Luke (the main protagonist) was "... always safe and protected by the house and the barn and the woods. Until they took the woods away." Much in the U.S.’s relatively short history has been influenced by various contributors to its cultural melting pot. Groups such as Native tribes, European settlements, and religious groups are just some of the communities that influenced the cultural landscape, particularly in the country’s early inception. The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, known as the Shakers because of their ecstatic dancing, are a Christian organization that broke off from the Quakers in the 18th century and fled England right before the start of the American Revolution in pursuit of freedom (PBS.org).

Symbolism is a literary element commonly used by several authors to help represent a bigger picture. It can help the reader relate what the author is talking about to something more well known. Symbolism in Hills Like White Elephants In short stories, because of the length of the story, all actions, words, and objects carry more of a meaning. These are referred to as symbols. “Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.” Symbols can add a deeper meaning than just an object itself that the author is trying to make. Symbols can also foreshadow what is yet to come. The audience can interpret a symbol in many ways it depends on their experience. Symbolism in general is the building blocks to all sources of literature and can shape a piece of writing in many ways. Symbols in general can portray what something or someone represents, giving a deeper and metaphorical meaning to a symbol. Symbolism is often used within poetry, literature, music, or even art. This is how an author conveys a different meaning to the audience. For example artists may use the color “red” not only because of the color theory, but to convey love, passion, and maybe even health.
