My Grandmother Research Paper

A few individuals have influenced by life in a significant way, but perhaps no one in more ways than my maternal grandmother. A couple of years ago I felt the urge to look at old photos for a picture of Grandmother Morrison. I found a small black and white photo taken when she was about 87 years of age. I bought a small black frame and placed the photo in it and put it on the table beside my bed.

In the photo my grandmother stands in front of an apple tree which is loaded with fruit. She wears a housedress and an apron and has a cane in her left hand. Her gray hair is pulled back into a braided bun at the nape of her neck, the same hairstyle she always wore for as long as I knew her. No one else I knew wore their hair in that style. Other women of her age had short hair. I loved that my grandmother had long hair braided and coiled into a bun, the bun held in place by long tortoise-shell looking plastic pins. Grandmother was a small woman and I thought she looked somewhat elegant even in her housedresses and aprons and wearing no makeup.

Money was scarce. They walked to the grocery store and wherever else they needed to go having no automobile. They ate basic food, plenty of beans, bacon, potatoes, and always it seemed applesauce. Their house was old and unpainted. The furniture was old and sparse. Nothing fancy. My grandmother never owned a television. The walls in the living room were loaded with family photographs, many of which were photos of the sons who served in World War II all dressed up in their military uniforms. A wood stove stood in the middle of this room. There was no indoor plumbing, no running water.
