Heroes are, “People who take risks despite fear”(Source 2). In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus faces many challenges that make him a hero. He battles monsters, goddesses, and enchantresses. Odysseus is a hero in the way that he uses his brain to think about and approach dilemmas. When he and his men are on the Cyclops’ island, Odysseus tells the cyclops that his name was Nobody.
Odysseus is heroic, courageous, outrageous, bold, fearless, manful, and valiant. Odysseus is heroic because he tricked the cyclops thinking that nobody was his name. Odysseus told his men to make a sharp spear and drop the spear in the cyclops eye so he can remove the giant rock and escape. Odysseus is fearless because him and his son killed the men that tried to take over his kingdom and marry his wife. Another thing is that Odysseus is bold because he made his son believe he was the father after the son did not believe him.
You’ve seen it everywhere; books, movies, t.v shows, they all have got it. But what exactly for all intents and purposes is “it”? “It” is the Elements of the Archetypal Hero. This concept was actually theorized by Joseph Campbell. From older classics such as The Odyssey written by Homer and newer classics such as George Lucas’s Star Wars: A New Hope, these elements can be seen being portrayed.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus displays a trait of being an epic hero by portraying how ethical he is. When he arrives at the palace of Alcinous in the land of the Phaeacians, Odysseus sees the queen and… “he throws himself at her feet” (summary book 7). In this moment he shows great respect and is very conscientious of the queen. Many people during this time would most likely not throw themselves at the queen’s feet, but he did because of his respect for her. Odysseus shows his great amount of ethical abilities in his personality through this action.
What would it feel like to have the whole world targeting you? What would it be like when it took you 20 years to get back to your home? I doubt you’d know. Unless you’re Koro Sensei (a yellow, octopus-like creature who can fly at mach 20 and plans to destroy the Earth in less than a year’s time, and trains a class of 27 students to try and assassinate him) or Odysseus (goes to fight the Trojan war for 10 years and due to bad luck and misfortune, and the [very angry] sea god Poseidon, it takes another 10 years to voyage home). It is true that Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, powerful and smart, but he does these things in a selfish way.
What does being a hero mean? Being a hero means being brave, confident at times, having good leadership skills, willing to fight for their town, and smart every once in awhile. How does being a hero qualify to Odysseus? At times Odysseus can be a good man til he has to leave for war and a variety of things happen.
Who is a hero? A hero takes many forms, such as an allegorical hero, a tragic hero, or an epic hero. In the age of postmodernism, there are instances where a person can be both a hero and a villain. Odysseus is difficult to identify as a hero because of his many vices.
The qualities that heroes should have are smarts so they can get out of tough situations such as if the villain traps them in a bind. The other thing they need to be cunning to use their skills to escape or evade their enemies. They should be fearless because if they're not fearless they might die because they would freeze up from the fear. Also they need to be strong physically and mentally if they're not strong they couldn't get out of difficult situations. Odysseus is not a typical hero because he’s unfaithful to his wife, he’s arrogant, and he puts his crew in terrible situations where most of them will die, though he still has all the qualities a hero should possess.
Odysseus an Epic Hero Have you ever wondered what made Odysseus and epic hero? According to Wikipedia he was the Greek king of Ithaca and a hero of Homer's epic poem The Odyssey. The Odyssey made him famous for his journey after the Trojan war started. After a ten year journey Odysseus was admired, but also hated by many civilians and even gods. To many people Odysseus was a man full of courage, great leadership, and was love towards his family.
This moment of so-called heroism suggests that Odysseus has still not learned the consequences of his impulsive actions he makes for his personal gain. Although Odysseus puts his people in danger, he has always remained loyal to his wife Penelope and the country of Ithaka. During the Trojan War era, it was a common occasion to have people go to war and risk their lives without ever even debating it. With this in mind, Odysseus’s people look to him as a hero because he is both a great warrior and a loyal leader to their country. Odysseus killing the suitors back in Ithaka may seem cruel, but you can see the admiration people have for him when Telemachos says, “You must look to this yourself, dear father; for they say you have the best mind among
