The industry has grown at 8.68 per cent over last year with a production of 23.37 million vehicles in 2014-15. The Indian automobile industry is expected to be the world 's third largest by 2016. Further, passenger vehicle production is expected to increase from 3.2 million in 2015 to 10 million in 2020. Currently, 13 per cent market share is governed by Passenger Vehicle (PV) segment. It was established as a joint venture with Suzuki of Japan. Its first car, the Maruti 800, was rolled out of the Gurgaon facility on 14th December, 1983. Until recently, 18.28% of the company was owned by the Indian government, and 54.2% by Suzuki of Japan. The Indian government held an initial public offering of 25% of the company in June 2003. As of May 10, 2007, Govt. of India sold its complete share to Indian financial institutions. With this, Govt. of India no longer has stake in Maruti. MSIL contributes to about 45% of the total industry sales in India. Maruti Suzuki has been the leader of the Indian car market for over two and a half decades. The company has two manufacturing facilities located at Gurgaon and Manesar, south of New Delhi, India. Both the facilities have a combined capability to produce over a 1.5 million (1,500,000) vehicles annually. Company posted its highest market share in more than a decade in July 2015. Almost one in every 2 passenger vehicles is of Maruti brand. Maruti Suzuki produced more vehicles than ever before in its history in last 2-3 months. It aims for the output of 1.44 million this fiscal year. Company’s market share is close to 47% and it has grown by over 8% over past 4 years. All this is well supported by the strengths mentioned above like good knowledge of Indian market and well spread distribution
