Impressionism and Postimpressionism Paintings The rise of impressionism stemmed from a resistance against the Neoclassicism. It emphasizes "what you see is what you get". The artist used light and shadow to show the scene and did not advocate the inclusion of subjective feelings. Post-impressionist on the basis of the impressionist used the impressionist painting techniques but stressed that join the painter 's subjective judgment. The mass-tone, dark blue in the oil painting represented a gloomy feeling. A thick brush might indicate the author 's anxiety in a mental hospital. The trees were like black fire burning towards the sky, which brought the feel of unease. The texture of the sky was like a whirlpool galaxy with many light points. Each star rotated in the night sky, and the crescent also formed a vortex. The nebula and the lines were like a dragon swinging. In the whole picture, the village at the bottom was drawing with straight, thick lines, showing a kind of tranquility, but a strong contrast was between the rough lines of the upper part. This conflict reflected the artist 's restless feelings and the psychedelic image world in this highly exaggerated distortion and strong visual contrast. Two lines style - curved long lines and broken short line applied interactively, which make the picture presented a dazzling fantasy. This was obviously out of reality, purely for van Gogh’s own imagination. In his composition, the turbulent sky contrasted with the peaceful village. Trees achieved visual balance with horizontal mountains and sky. The colors were full of blue and green. He used a continuous and wavy brush to express nebulae and trees. The nebulae and trees were like a ball of blazing fire lightening the dark. This was the most intense fantasy of the heart. This is also the creative attempt to vent the unquenchable emotions
The sky is above the mountains and is the only light colored part of the painting with its blues and whites for the clouds. The whole other half of the painting is dramatic with dark brown and blacks mixed with dark greens and oranges within the trees. I believe the artist depicts the world as representational in his painting because the scenery is almost life like and realistic. Oil on canvas was used for this painting; in which all oil paints
The sun beams from the sky are lighting up a small area of the painting and the rest is dark and gloomy. The gloominess of the painting represents dark and depressing times while the brightness of the sky creeps through thick dark clouds. This represents heaven because heaven is so large and bright and amazing that even though life is hard and seems like the world is ending, there is always something greater out there. Personally, I love this painting. I really like how Dore paints that trees and valley dark because it really highlights the beams from the sun.
The imagery used here creates a very calm and serine setting. The sky has a “half-moon” and is “riddled with stars”, while “crickets chirped” and the wind “wafted through the trees”. Amir also says that ground was “cool under his bare feet” (240). All of these descriptions either appeal to the senses of sight, touch, or hearing and these in turn create a vivid picture for the audience to think of. This is a great example of how much imagery can affect
The most influential is Pablo Picasso and his paintings. “Les Demoiselles was the precursor of a new style called cubism” (395). Cubism was a new style of modern art. With the spread of technology and finding its’ way into the art realm, it produced a new style art called “Futurism”. Since the Modernism era was about expression away from tradition, this idea was the birth of “expressionism” in art.
The painting that I chose to analyze was William Maw Egley’s Omnibus Life in London (1859). Painted on an oil medium, it depicts a scene of an omnibus, a horse-drawn carriage that acted as public transportation, pulled over at a certain stop along a particular route (Tate). In the painting, it features a crowded bus as more people attempt to board it. There are various people from every type of social class, which will be examined during the contextual analysis section to interpret the meaning historically. Also, this paper will analyze the formal structure of the painting through color, lines, space and mass, and composition.

In this artwork, Van Gogh uses strong vertical lines to give the sense of unease. These lines are present in the floor boards, the chair and in the wall. The lines give an unnerving feel to the room as vertical lines suggest that the room was not a place of tranquility, or calmness, but a rather gives a sense of despair. Furthermore, In the room there is also horizontal lines to suggest peace, and calmness.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many artists, among them Paul Signac, Henri Matisse, and Franz Marc, developed new languages of representation and color to move away from the traditions of illusionism. With approaches ranging from the scientific to expressionist, these three artists made choices about color that ran counter to traditional notions of painterly technique. In addition to their varied techniques, Signac, Matisse, and Marc had different ends in mind for their respective styles. Overall, through developing new languages of color, these three artists subverted the time-honored styles of academy art and pushed painting into the 20th century. Paul Signac was among the most important Neo-Impressionists, a well-organized movement
Otto Dix’s The War Otto Dix, a German expressionist painter started his art career at young age, while he was in elementary school. He became an apprentice to a teacher and studied art, later to move on to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts as a young adult. Later on he volunteered to join the German military, and was eager when he found out he was going to become a machine gunner. The war was not how he thought it would be though, as he was traumatized by the scenes of the war and came back as a different person. His painting styles grew to a darker and more sinister outlook on life with a main focus on war that gave a deathly feeling.
In the 18th century, another one of the greatest artist of all time, Vincent Van Gogh illustrated a very personal painting. The Starry Night is now one of the most widely known paintings in the world, but the story and meaning is not. Both artist used dark and grim themes when it came to their creations, and that is what draws the public to them. In today 's society we are able to relate to the deeper and more mentally touching symbols of these pieces of art. Andrew Wyeth’s painting, Christina’s World shows a young woman in a empty field looking up at a grim farmhouse on a rustic summer day.
