One of the most widely recognized versions of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is the 1968 movie, Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet the director, Franco Zeffirelli, contributes many aspects of the movie that develop it as a whole. The main characters are named Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. They are played by two very young actors. Juliet is played by Olivia Hussey, and Romeo is played by Leonard Whiting. One of the most prominent features of this movie is how young the director chose the actors for the two lead roles to be. Leonard Whiting was seventeen and Olivia Hussey was only fifteen! At the time of this movie, that was nearly unheard of for such young and inexperienced actors to be cast in adaptations of Romeo and Juliet, despite the young age of the actual characters. The film itself has won many awards, including but not limited to two Oscars and three Golden Globes. Both Hussey and Whiting won "Most Promising Newcomer" from their debut in this movie. …show more content…
Romeo unconventionally attends a Capulet ball in disguise, and the two fall madly in love with each other, despite their family's advice to hate each other. They elope in secret, but, unfortunately, Juliet is already set to marry Count Paris by her dad who is unaware of her marriage to Romeo. The costumes throughout the movie are very medieval and well done. The setting of the movie in the streets is also very medieval and has lots of brick and stone. The background music adds to the emotions of all the scenes, especially the sad ones. The mise en scène of the window scene and how far apart they are shows the inevitable distance between Romeo and Juliet that creates conflict when they want to be together. The actors or very dramatic and extreme throughout the whole film which really adds to the formal and medieval feel of the
Imagine a tale of young love ending in tragedy. The story of Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare about two teens who fall in love with each other at their own demise. The play is set in Verona Italy in the 15th century. There’s two families, Montagues and Capulets, that hate each other very much. The feud between the two families has caused much chaos in the city and many fights have broken out.
Compared to Zeffirelli’s version, which is very bland, Luhrmann makes the play seem more enthralling with the music, weather, emotion. Luhrmann incorporates music and the weather to make the scenes more dramatic. When Mercutio falls, the weather suddenly darkens, and the effective use of music makes Mercutio’s death seem all the more tragic. Additionally, there is more emotion, you can feel how angry and sad Romeo is when Mercutio dies. You can feel his rage when he chases down Tybalt and then shoots his body full of holes.
Romeo and Juliet is a well-known play, which was written by William Shakespeare in 1594. A lot of different actors have performed this play throughout the years. One the most important characters in the play has to be Romeo because if wouldn’t have come up to Juliet the play would have been really different. Romeo is romantic, impulsive, and brave.
Romeo and Juliet is a very popular play, originally written by William Shakespear. William Shakespear is very famous. Known for the play Romeo and Juliet, but since then there have been movies made based on this play. The movie Romeo and Juliet is a story about love.
There was a feud going on between the two families that lead to a series of tragedies. In the play and movie of Romeo and Juliet there were two young teens. One was named Juliet, her mother was forcing her to marry a guy named Paris. However she did not want to marry Paris. Then there was Romeo who was from a different household; that happened to be enemies with the Capulet household.
Romeo and Juliet is a classic play by William Shakespeare, In 1968 it was adapted in a full movie, and later on in 1996 was again adapted into the big screen, both movies have so many similarities and so many differences, in the 1968 movie it is a more realistic, more true to the script, but the 1996 movie takes place in verona beach in the US, in modern times, the sword fights are actually guns, both use shakespearean english, but the most important part of any Romeo and Juliet performance, is to show their love was never meant to be, both movies do an excellent job in portraying this concept, in this essay I will explore that Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is starcrossed is portrayed by the 1968 and 1996 version through the first time they meet in the party, the balcony scene, and the scene where they are in bed. The first time Romeo and Juliet meet is at the Capulet party, this is portrayed in both movies differently, in the 1996 version Romeo is walking by an aquarium, looking at the fish, when he sees juliet, their eyes meet and follow each other, but just as they were going to come face to face, Juliet’s nurse grabs her, and takes her away to dance with Paris her future husband. In the 1968 version Romeo is far away from Juliet, and he hides behind a column, she is dancing with some people, but she is too far away, and has lots of people between Romeo and Juliet.
Zeffirelli has made a very nice version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Scene 2, and it’s the one I enjoyed the most. Zeffirelli portrayed Juliet very well with the actress Olivia Hussey. Although older than Juliet’s age of 14 in Shakespeare’s original play, Olivia Hussey successfully interpreted Juliet’s youthful and lively nature. Olivia Hussey also delivered the role of Juliet with great emotion and gestures. Her tone changes as she is saying her deep thoughts of Romeo’s name to her love for him.
The play “Romeo and Juliet,” written by William Shakespeare is a world renowned tragedy which follows the story of two lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, who both originate from the city of Verona. At the beginning of the play, Juliet who is 13, is characterized as a young, naïve girl; who, after meeting Romeo is flung into adulthood very abruptly and goes through many different character developments. These character developments led Juliet to becoming a self-assured, loyal and knowing woman, whose choices, along with those of Romeo’s lead both to their untimely deaths. From the beginning of the play “Romeo and Juliet,” up until act 1, scene 5, where Juliet meets Romeo, Juliet is conveyed by William Shakespeare to be a young and naïve child. Juliet is seen in many occasions to follow her parent’s orders in spite of what she actually feels or thinks in order to please them.
“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”, is a line that was very important to the history of literature. It tells of the inevitable fate of two star-crossed lovers that were bound to death because of each other. There have been many movies and plays preformed with this story line, but two in particular are the Baz Luhrmann film and the original play’s text. Both the Baz Luhrmann film and William Shakespeare’s play of Romeo and Juliet may be compared by focusing on the following scenes: the party scene, balcony scene, fight and death scene of Tybalt and Mercutio, and the suicide scene.
After reviewing the 'balcony scene' from both the 1968 and 1996 versions of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, I have concluded that the 1968 version better portrays the essence and theme of the original text. As for the setting in which the scene takes place, the 1968 version takes place outside Juliet's house as Romeo sneaks in to see her. The entire perimeter of the house is surrounded by trees, making the scene seem more private and intimate. The house Juliet is living in is very high off the ground with a balcony looking out into the woods. When Romeo makes it through the trees he sees Juliet; there is a clear separation between them that is a metaphor for the difficulty that is their disputing families.
And the feud between the two families creates chaos in the community. The whole movies have kept the track of originality in its important characters, scenes and the flow of the play. The story starts with a fight with scene between the Montague boys and the Capulet’s and ends with the death of the lovers, Romeo and Juliet. However, there are
The film Romeo and Juliet, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, is a story about two families, set in the fair city of Verona, Italy. The genres of this movie are both romance and drama, play starring many actors such as Olivia Hussey (playing as Juliet), Leonard Whiting (playing as Romeo), Bruce Robinson (playing as Benvolio), and other cast members who played important roles in the film. The main characters in this film are Juliet, a young girl from the Capulet household, along with Romeo, a young man from the Montague household. The film not only has beautiful costumes and production but also includes a short soundtrack where a song named “What Is a Youth” was included in the film itself.
Romeo & Juliet William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet entails a story of a young impulsive love that ends in a disaster. This traces the secret romantic relationship between the two families in Verona, as they carry an ancient feud, deepening from generation to generation. Romeo—a Montague—falls deeply in love with Juliet—a Capulet—at a masquerade ball arranged by Juliet’s father. Later during the night, these two lovers expose their love to each other as they decide to marry each other next day. However, life does not follow plans.
For the cinematography analysis of both movies, I will be basing it on the final scene of both movies. Music and sound In Romeo+ Juliet, the scene begins where Romeo is chased by the police and he runs into the church. There is dramatic opera music as he’s being chased, this music is in the background of all the chaos in the scene with the loud helicopter and the police sirens, and this anticipates a climax for the audience. This chaos dies down immediately when he closes the door of the church, religion is one of the themes in the story, so this symbolises that the church brings peace, although we do still hear the sound of the helicopter to signify that the police are still outside.
Of course I still object to the removing of Romeo buying the poison and killing Paris, yet it made him more loving and kind and not like a murderer. And seeing Tybalt freeze when he sees the blood on his sword, seeing him move towards Mercutio and being pushed away by his followers-itś
