It has been argued that in war there is no winner. I believe this statement to be true. As demonstrated in The Sniper, every side has losses, and some of them were once friends. In The Sniper, the sniper shoots the opposing sniper only to find out, it’s his own brother. During The Irish Civil War many friendships, families and relationships in general were split because of the treaty with England. Many people in that war lost family members because they sided with the opposing side (as shown in The Sniper). This was rather common with other wars as well, for instance; The American Revolution, the American Civil War, and the War on Terrorism (that we are in now). In the American Revolution, some colonists joined with the rebels, while others
In the stories "The Sniper" and "The Scarlet Ibis" explains the relationships between the protagonist and his brother. In the first story "The Sniper" the protagonist and his brother were both in war together. They both were in the dark night of war and they were both in there hiding. The one brother got shot in the arm and then saw someone on a different roof and planned a secret attack. After the secret attack the solider went to see who he shot and sadly found out it was his brother.
In the stories The Sniper and Scarlet Ibis the protagonists both lost their brothers. In the first story the sniper. The Sniper and his brother were on different sides of the war. He didn't know his brother was on the other side on the other building and he was shooting at him. He didn't know it was his own brother tell he came down from the building and looked at who he had shot.
Killing is an action that can never be undone. In the novel War Brothers, Sharon E. Mckay examines the impact of this action. War Brothers is a story about four children fighting for survival after their capture by the LRA. During their time in the LRA, they all learn what the true meaning of family is and how you have to look out for not only yourself but others too. There are three characters in the novel that are impacted in different ways by the choice to kill.
Numerous people were left wounded and many dead bodies were left in the battlefield. The British ran a tyranny that will eventually destroy the liberty of the colonies hence, they have no other option than to rebel and resist by force. Thomas once said, “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” He wanted to contribute the fact that the only way to obtain true freedom is by breaking away from what is keeping you captive. Thomas knew that
The Xinhai Revolution was an important bourgeois-democratic revolution in China's modern history, which ended more than 2,000 years of feudal monarchy and established a republican form of government. The American Revolutionary War was a bourgeois revolution aimed at fighting for national independence, national liberation, and democracy, freedom, and equality. There are many similarities between the two, but there are also essential differences. Both the American Revolutionary War and the Xinhai Revolution were bourgeois revolutions for national independence and national prosperity, and both dealt a heavy blow to the rule of the Qing Dynasty. However, the American Revolutionary War was ultimately successful, while the Xinhai Revolution regarded
REVOLUTIONARY WAR The reputation of the American marksman has been an asset since the country’s creation. Throughout the American Revolutionary War, the frontiersmen were used to traveling as a self-sufficient unit, often carrying a full complement on their backs, which provided everything they needed in order to survive unaccompanied. Besides their rifles, the shooting bag was the last item they abandon. Moreover, the advantage of these riflemen was reinforced by George Washington’s confidence in their ability to be a force multiplier on the battlefield.
War is senseless violence and brutality, but also where you can fight for freedom and end injustice. The negatives of war, like senseless brutality are sometimes used for lessons, so men don’t abandon the war. The positives are fighting for your freedom and ending injustice, if your country wins the war you get your freedom and you stop unnecessary deaths. In the book, My Brother Sam is Dead, the Collier brothers show that war has many goods and bads to it. In the book, My Brother Sam is Dead, Tim decides to be neutral, at the end of the novel, due to the ironic death of his best friend Jerry, his father Life, and his brother Sam.
In war no one is your enemy because there is no one that you need to hurt. In The Sniper and All the lights we cannot see, both the boys from All the lights we cannot see and the republican sniper feel for their enemy. They show empathy towards someone who they are meant to hurt. Frederick in all the lights we cannot see shows empathy through discovering his orders in partaking in the prisoners torture. Not only this
Every single soldier in the war came close to death, whether watching a fellow fighter die, almost dying themselves, or killing an innocent victim. Anywhere from 620,000-850,000
With all of the problems in today’s society, war is the most heavily debated dilemma because it can have a positive and negative effect depending on a person’s view about it. War has some good effects like erasing injustice and ending tyranny. However, there are also negative effects, due to the brutality of war and all of the innocent lives lost. In the book, My Brother Sam is Dead, it explains what it was like to live during the Revolutionary War, though the eyes of a boy named Tim. Not only does he have to witness this life changing battle, but he also ends up having a inner-battle with himself.
“So the first thing that the war has done to the family is to give it not only a fresh popularity, but a deepened honor.” ("War and the Family"). With knowing this it can show how war can bring families together, the reason why this quote is important is because when Kathleen asked her father if he has ever killed anyone it made him think about his actions and what he had to do to be where he is today, with his daughter in his arms so I believe he is glad what he did so he could hold his daughter in his arms. The way the war has affected his family life was a positive impact, he realized how grateful he was that he pulled the pin on that grenade so he could be where he is today, and not on the other side When we are at war does it make us feel safe, how does it impact the family member that has troops in it, how will war affect
“War turns men into beasts,” Mrs. Meeker explained (Collier and Collier 140). In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead by James and Christopher Collier, Tim Meeker watched the Revolutionary War rage on. In the town of Redding Ridge, Connecticut Tim and his family, which includes his father, mother, and brother, are mostly Tories, except for Tim’s older brother, Sam who has joined the war, fighting for the Patriots. Through the story, Tim is struggling to decide which side he supports—the Patriots or the British, or whether he supports or disagrees with war. Although both sides of war are shown, authors Collier and Collier ultimately argue that war is futile.
"I say we make our deaths count for something" ( Evans 287) . Not only was this impervious group of friends loyal to each other, but to their beliefs too. Even if they did not live to see the glory and celebration of their win, they could die happy, as it was understood that what they fought for was
In 1763, the British and the colonists emerged victorious from the Seven Years’ War after the signing of peace terms at Paris, granting Britain a colonial empire in North America and an end to control of North American lands by the French and groups of Native Americans. These similarities did not last long, however. On October 7, 1763, the British Parliament passed the Proclamation of 1763, prohibiting colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains, a frontier which the colonists believed they could explore after defending and securing a New World empire. This angered the colonists, and their bitterness toward their mother country would become significantly stronger over the following twelve years leading up to the inception of war with Britain. Over the course of these years, colonists moved from
In the short story The Sniper by Liam O’Flaherty, a main theme is that war is cruel. This is supported by many details within the story. War makes people do things that they normally wouldn’t do, mostly because it is their duty to protect what they believe in or their country. For example, the
