This inspiring and powerful documentary approaches the life of Jonathan Larson as he went through the ingenious creation of Rent. Although Larson’s perspective could not be heard when making this film, his friends, colleagues, and relatives provided insight on his life and the process of his work. I found it very impactful how Larson saw problems in society, and used his gift of music composition and storytelling

This was a moment which changed the trajectory of his work, as he had much more time to write music and dive deeper into his artistic exploration. The reason this moment really impacted me was because I have experienced something quite similar through my experience as an aspiring artist. My whole life, I played sports and thought about potentially pursuing them in college. However, my love for theatre and artistic collaboration was always a priority for me. I remember the exact moment where I made the decision to quit sports in order to fully commit to my artistic dreams.I have not regretted this decision since, and would make it again if I was in the same position. This moment in my life was truly liberating for me as I had much more time to explore and develop myself as an artist. Based on the video, it is evident that the same could be said for Jonathan Larson. Not only was this impactful due to the relevant experiences I have gone through, but it also demonstrated the ups and downs many aspiring artists face. Many pursuing art must work other jobs in order to pay bills and stay afloat financially. Larson’s family really understood Jonathan's roots and his struggle to become an artist even after his work became so successful. Julie Larson, Jonathan’s sister said when receiving a Tony award for Jonathan after his death, ‘“It took …show more content…
He was always able to make the most out of what he had in front of him regardless of what his dreams entailed. He never complained about his job at the diner and knew that it paid the bills and allowed him to write music. Although he was not making much money, he knew that it was all part of his process to becoming successful. Making the most out of the situation is something that Jonathan Larson seemed to live by. “Rent was John. The optimism and the hope that you see in Rent, is what I saw to be what he lived with” (Anne Taback) (Jonathan Larson’s cousin) His optimism set him up for success, just in appreciating all aspects that his life and artistic journey had to offer. This is a mindset that I would like to incorporate more into my

and i feel stuck and defeated. Antwone Fisher lived a life of nights like these but he still grew up to be someone. Fisher’s story is a reminder that it’s possible to rise above the circumstances. It helped me to realize that no matter the circumstances, as long as they work hard, anyone has the chance to do something
A key part would be how Larson intensively wrote about the dirty antics of the politicians. For example, Alexander Hamilton trying to prevent Adams from becoming Vice President. He willingly put words into Adams’ mouth to make him seem unfit for the position. This has ultimately changed my perspective on Alexander Hamilton. I thought of him as a very key figure in history because of the Revolutionary War not because of his sabotage of political affairs.
His Dad, Jack was a shoes salesman. They moved around a lot when he was growing up. His dad was also had a problem with drinking alcohol. Despite all of that, his Dad taught him the value of hard work, the importance
If you believe that hard work pays off, then you work hard and you succeed. And I want people to understand something I learned only recently: I am lucky enough to live the American Dream, and so are you” (9). Growing up with a drug addict of a mother, no father figure, no money, and barely any education, Vance is almost guaranteed lack of success. Through determination, will, and ethic, however, Vance freed himself from the burdens of his town and family and emerged as an author and lawyer who uses his own life as an example to all that with hard work and intention, anyone can break from an unhealthy, inimical environment and strive to become successful. Additionally, this cultural aspect is connected to the purpose of the memoir; Vance’s intention is that through
John is successful in making it to freedom in America but still needs to make a living for his family to sustain itself. An example of John success is when he writes, “I'm in 11th grade at Boston English High School... It is important to get education” (Kuol)This quotes shows the fact that John has successfully free and is eager in getting an
“The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it’s possible to achieve the American dream”(Tommy Hilfiger). In the story The Glass Castle, the protagonist Jeannette Walls demonstrates that anyone can live their American dream; sometimes hardships,in order to live up to their dreams. The Glass Castle is not much different from the present world, some want wealth and fortune, while others want peace and happiness. The society of The Glass Castle views the American dream in many ways, but two views are mainly shown in the story. The story supports the dream of having freedom and success, along with the dream of having peace and happiness.
Arguably, this stylistic choice presents juxtaposition between the hope of changing your entire outlook on life and the reality
It became a dream for him. And now he’s living and pursuing it not ever knowing he would get to the position he’s in today. Tyler Perry’s hard work paid off at the end. He gets much more attention than he used to.
Success: An Escape from Privation Inevitably, the conflicts people face at multiple points in their life is a determining factor in shaping individuals into the person they will eventually become. Namely, these conflicts direct people 's behavior over the course of time; contributing to a person’s ability to achieve success. In particular, Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle is an honest depiction of her life and the conflicts that arise throughout her state of impoverishment, as well as the success that stems from her hardships.
“Believe in miracles…. Hope is never lost” (Elder Jeffrey R. Holland). Believing that the worst is behind them and that they will come upon a better life is the only way that Jeanette Wall’s family is able to stay afloat. In Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle, the symbol of hope is portrayed through a Glass Castle: a real home in which everyone is important and loved.
Baker's own experiences show the value of knowledge and perseverance in overcoming adversity and succeeding in one's career. Despite his family's financial difficulties, Baker was able to receive a scholarship to attend college and finally found success as a journalist. Similarly, despite having to leave school to support the family, Baker's brother was able to launch a successful career in advertising. But not every member of Baker's family faced the same obstacles to realizing the American Dream.
How it all began with his rising interest in music, which he contributed to his
Growing up, Larson had several musical influences that shaped his specific music taste including Kurt Cobain, Liz Phair, Prince, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim became a personal mentor to Jonathan later in his career. In high school Larson began acting and composing. After graduating, he attended Adelphi College on an acting scholarship where he studied under the accomplished Jacques Burdick. It was his time at Adelphi where his interest in playwriting began.
At a young age, I constantly wanted to express myself through music. I always found a way to incorporate music into my daily life, whether it be by blasting my favorite music, creating my own funky songs, or even having the opportunity to participate in my elementary school choir. My love for music actually took flight after I had decided to join my elementary school choir, however, in my opinion, it is not the most transformative moment in my life. After elementary
