Nepal is well known for country of the Mt. Everest, the highest peak in the world and a famous destination for adventure tourism. The world heritage Lumbini (birth place of Gautam Buddha) is also located in Nepal. Natural scenic landscape and biodiversity, high Himalayas, incomparable cultural heritage and other numerous peculiarities have made Nepal a well-known destination in the world tourism map with a distinct image (NTB, 2009). These qualities made Nepal a unique place giving high potentialities for the growth of tourism industry. So far, the pace of tourism industry development could not be considered promising from the perspective of economic development. 2001 saw one of the worst events in Nepal – The royal massacre, in which our beloved King His Highness Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and his entire family were mysteriously murdered.
Nepal tourism despite having a longer history has really developed since 1950s.Tourism has now emerged as a major contributor to the country’s economy. Figures released by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation show that the number of tourists has increased from 602,855 in 2010 – 2011 to 803,092 in 2011 – 2012. With the world’s largest mountain range ‘the Himalayas’, the tallest peak, Mt. Everest, and many areas of untouched nature to offer Nepal attracts many tourists, trekkers and climbers and has become one of the hottest destinations for tourism.
The tourism industry is growing very rapidly and Nepal has tremendous potential for tourism development because of its unique natural and cultural heritage. In this context, this tourism policy has been formulated with the aims of: increasing national productivity and income; increasing foreign currency earnings; creating employment opportunities; improving regional imbalances and projecting the image of Nepal more assertively in the international arena; through the development and diversification of the travel and tourism
