Author Brent Staples considers the numerous ways in which his presence as a black man in public areas can cause people to feel fear and worry in his essay "Just Go On By: A Black Man Ponders His Ability to Change Public Space." Staples illustrates how society has criminalized and stereotyped black males throughout the article by using personal tales and historical background. This has led to an engrained fear of black men's presence. Staples carefully develops an argument that forces readers to face their own racial biases and presumptions through the careful use of purpose, unity, coherence, organization, and revision. Staples' article serves two purposes: to educate readers on the realities of racial profiling and discrimination and to persuade them to consider their own prejudices.
