American Slave John Bruce Period: 7-8 In the book Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass An American Slave, Douglass Shows that he his a true patriotic American in every way. Douglass shows this by being committed to helping his fellow slaves, he does this by starting up his school in the cabin of the woods. Douglass did this for no money or no benefits, the only benefits that Douglass got was him teaching his fellow slave how to read and write, the masters did not want the slaves to know how to read or write so that they can ramine stupid and be easy to control Douglass wanted them to see more in life and see how things really are. Douglass was born a slave and his mom died when he was young. Douglass had many masters some a lot better than others he did much hard work just like any other slave and if he wouldn't do it or didn't do it right he would get slashed. Douglass was a slave in the city for a while when he was young. There he learned how to read and write, he started learning by a white free woman who eventually could no longer teach him because Douglass’s master told her that slaves are not allowed to be taught how to read and write. The master said that a slave needs to be uneducated so that they can be controlled and cannot provide for himself then this way they will need someone like a master to take care of them. Douglass overheard what he said and knew that if he ever wanted to be a freeman that can rely on himself he will need to learn how to read and write. Douglass taught himself some reading and writing and also learned lots of it from young boys in the city. If Douglass never learned how to read or write he would have always been a slave. This shows us Americans, that if we want to succeed in life we got to be committed to our education and should always no matter what try to only rely on ourselves that is the key to self
