Many times in literature, characters have difficulties that they must overcome. In the Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway this had happened to the main character Santiago. Santiago is faced with the difficulty of hunting down the eighteen foot Marlin fish tormenting him physically in pain and mentally in regret. While in the Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Doodle one of the main characters, of the short story is also faced with a difficulty, which is his fitness. In the Old Man in the Sea Santiago shows his endurance of the difficulties he is faced with. Santiago is a very experienced fisher, but has a string of bad luck when he has not caught any fish for eighty four days . He is thought to be bad luck by many fishermen. Some even …show more content…
The fish was eighteen feet in size and fifteen hundred pounds in weight. He set up a trap for the fish, which took three long brutal days for him to finally kill and subdue the fish. He was sleep deprived, hungry, aching in every part of his body, and still did not waver at letting go of the fish. He eventually killed the Marlin by jabbing his harpoon inside of it instantly killing it. Santiago was very happy fulfilling his goal and …show more content…
His happiness ended when he attracted a handful of sharks. The first shark came swiftly eating a quarter of the fish, but was killed by Santiago. Then two more sharks came attacking the fish and then dying at the hands of Santiago. When Santiago had surveyed the damage he saw that most of the fish was eaten and there was nothing left but a skeleton. After all his journey, Santiago was battered down and broken returning home. As Manolin takes pity and a sense of pride for what Santiago, has done and went through he promised him he would never leave his side and would fish with him. Santiago at the end of the book is not filled with pride, but instead with regret, because of after all he went through to catch the Marlin he failed, to bring back all of it . In the Scarlet Ibis, there is a great sense of difficulty portraying the older brother who is unnamed, his stubbornness, and Doodle who is too hardworking and underestimated. Doodle was born a disabled child and his real name was William Armstrong. Everybody thought he was not going to live longer than a few days and even made him a coffin. The only person that believed he would live long enough was his Aunt Nicey, because he was born from a caul and had been made from
The Megaladon wants revenge against the shark and gets a little wild. The megaladon swims all over the ocean and he killed the shark who ate his children. The Megaladon was finally happy.
This was a story about what horrible greed can do. Not the type of greed for money, but greed for how you want things to be. It was a mistake to have the brother ever take care of Doodle, even if he was kind the brother had a cold heart. The brother will wanting to be kind was as selfish as selfish could be. In short the brother in Scarlet ibis was kind for the wrong
In the book “The Alchemist” there is a young boy named Santiago he had a dream about pyramids and a treasure so he sets off the next day and is trying to discover and accomplish his Personal legend which is a big treasure full of coins. Santiago is a very faithful person he sets off into his adventure and with all the obstacles he goes through he never gave up. He is always finding ways to get through his problems and never stops. He even worked extra hard for the merchant so he could get more coins. Towards the end of the story he talks to Fatima and falls in love with her then he promised her he will come back for her.
So he waits for the fish to lose energy and die. Santiago express his commitment to fishing. Only one thing would come out alive, either Santiago or the marlin, maybe neither.
In the story “The Scarlet Ibis”,James Hurst uses choice and emotion to explain what the relationship between Doodle and his brother is like. When Doodle was born no one thought he was going to survive, yet when he was three months old they decided to name him. He was named
The novels The Old Man and the Sea and Night both display extreme challenges faced by the main characters. From Old Man and the Sea, Santiago faces challenges with his sanity and reputation while trying to renew his fortune fishing and Elie faces a life and death scenario during his life as a prisoner of the Nazis in the novel Night. Throughout both novels, the main characters appear to have lost everything, yet they manage to piece their lives back together and restore their daily lives. These characters lives are destroyed, but they are not defeated. Santiago and Elie both lose critical aspects of themselves, signifying their destruction, renew their lives, expressing that they are not defeated, and both characters represent a real life defeat, but not
"What a man thinks of himself, that is which determines, or rather indicates, his fate." (Thoreau). This quote means that every person can have a fulfilling life if they believe in themselves. It suggests that everyone who pursues their dreams and does not allow obstacles to stop them is commanding of their own fate. As exhibited in The Alchemist and The Power of Myth, the quote is a true statement that is applicable to all people.
Obstacles can be challenging, and difficult, but people can overcome them by never giving up, always trying their best, and surrounding themselves with families and friends. Two stories that I have read that show adversity are “A Work in Progress” by Aimee Mullins which is about a little girl losing her leg. The other story I read is “So Far From the Bamboo Grove” by Yoko Kawashima Watkins about a little girl that has to leave her home because of war and has very big obstacles to overcome. Aimee Mullins and the Kawashimas both face obstacles that include losing family members, walking very far in intense weather, and people doubting you and trying to stop you. In the end they all make it through the the challenges mentally and physically.
There are many whales in the sea, but this particular whale called Moby Dick is the desirable catch for the whalers and captain due to its legendary proportions. In the novel, Moby Dick, it offers an allegorical story of humanity’s dangerous search for meaning. The monstrous, white whale represents that “meaning” humans have been hunting for their entire lives, but at the end one will discover that one can do so much but still end up not finding their answer. The entire plot to Moby Dick is directed towards the final confrontation between Ahab, his crewman and the White whale. At the end, the whale wins the fight and the rest of the crew on ship all die, demonstrating the fact that the whale cannot be defeated, hence signaling how the laws
His strength of mind is still strong like his youth. Therefore this essay will emphasize on the old man’s struggle against marlin, battle of willingness and his bravery which supports the theme determination. The old man Santiago struggles against marlin over day and night. Santiago travels far beyond from his home because he needs to reveal his strength and prove that he is still able to be the fisherman that he once was.
He is so poor that he sometimes does not even have food. Manolin brings him his supper, given to him by the owner of the Terrace (19-20). On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago goes far out into the Gulf Stream away from all the other fisherman to catch a big fish. He is “alone and out of sight of land” when he catches “the biggest fish that he [has] ever seen and bigger than he [has] ever heard of” (63). To prevent the giant marlin from getting away, Santiago holds onto the line using only his back, arms, and hands.
Around the world, people try to find the job that they are content with doing for the rest of their life. People often change jobs many times before they actually find that job. In Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, the old man found his job that he was happy doing for the rest of his life. That job was being a fisherman. The old man was content with all of the highs and lows that the job offered him.
As the plot thickens, a clear bond between man and nature is developed, but it is short lived. Santiago communicates with the birds, fish, stars, and all aspects of nature while considering them his “brother[s],” but when a shark appears, the relationship is broken. During the time of the crucifixion, Jesus prophesies a betraying force within his closest group of friends or essentially “brothers.” Knowing who will be the cause of his downfall does not deter him as he continues to travel the road of death. In conjunction with Santiago, this symbolizes the old man’s forecasting of sharks when he sadly admits, “It is over.
The old man (Santiago) has a struggle with defeat. At the beginning of the book he tells how he is on a streak of not catching a fish for 84 days and that he will probably break his record of 87. The story also focuses on death. When it comes to the time for Santiago to kill the fish he feels a slight restraint due to the fish’s greatness. He feels that the fish is a worthy opponent and should be honored, even though he doesn’t want to kill it he sees that it is necessary for him to do so.
The battle that The Old Man fights with the marlin, as well as the daunting task of defending the marlin from the countless sharks that follow the skiff, are two points in the novel where Hemingway really conveys the sense of struggling and suffering. This is how Hemingway tries to convey an underlying theme of the constant struggle between man and nature, by depicting the struggle between The Old Man and the Marlin, against all odds. The Old Man considers the fact that capturing the Marlin is such a great task for him since the Marlin is trying just as hard to evade and escape from The Old Man’s reach. Throughout this struggle, The Old Man, who eventually becomes very fatigued, keeps telling himself to push through the pain and bear it like a real man would. He pushes past the faintness and dizziness he experiences, he pushes himself to see beyond the black spots in his weary vision and he pushes past the pain in his hands to catch the Marlin which puts up a great fight against this frail old man.
