The reconnaissance team informed Lee that the Federal line was not completely extended past the little round top. Longstreet, who was positioned down towards that end of the Union line where the Union line was thought to be exposed, was told to attack that flank. Lee also commanded Ewell to attack the northern flank. When Longstreet received his orders he said, "The truth will be known in time, and I leave that to show how much of the responsibility of Gettysburg rests on my shoulders.” Longstreet thought his attack would be the most important assault in the war; he treated it as such, but that was yet to come.

During the winter 1776, Thomas Paine, a well known writer accompanies General Washingtons troops along the retreat from the dominating British forces. He inspires the troops with his speech, The Crisis, by using rhetroical strategies, and empowering tone, and religous inferences. Paines repetitive referance to God, gains the emotiond of the troops by enhancing their relieability towards their faiths. His speech mentions that power can not be invested to man, but only God has authourity over such entitlements. This develops pathos by having spiritual ingluences and makes Wahingtons troops feel condemned to fight for the cause.

Near the beginning of his renowned essay, "Civil Disobedience," Henry David Thoreau appeals to his fellow citizens when he says, "...I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government. " This request serves as a starting point from which the rest of "Civil Disobedience" emerges. Thoreau 's essay is particularly compelling because of its incorporation of rhetorical strategies, including the use of logos, ethos, pathos, purposive discourse, rhetorical competence and identification. I will demonstrate how each of these rhetorical techniques benefit Thoreau 's persuasive argument. Thoreau uses logos throughout his essay to strengthen his argument with reasoning.
Lee was so fearless he determined to invade the North reiteratively. Robert E. Lee strategy was to drift the fighting away from Virginia and into the Union Territory. He wanted to move the fighting, because the Confederate were under siege in Virginia. Lee hoped to gain recognition from Britain and France for the Confederacy. Joesph Hooker,the Union commander, was exposed to the worst defeat of the Army of Potomac in the Battle of Chancellorsville.

On November 19, 1863 Abraham Lincoln dedicated a speech to the cemetry at Gettysburg. Lincoln uses antithesis, parallism, and repition to enforce what he is addressing. In the Gettysburg address Lincoln uses an example of an antithesis, "far above our poor power to add or detract. " Lincoln uses antithesis to motivate the people by telling them that they either achieve or fail.
While both Abraham Lincoln’s “House Divided” speech and George Washington’s Farewell Address talks about the government and people uniting, Lincoln’s speech speaks more about slavery and Washington’s address advised warnings about the liberties necessary for the country/nation to survive. On June 16, 1858, Abraham Lincoln gave the speech at the State Republican to more than 1,000 delegates. He told them that they have to decide whether all states in the country will either promote slavery or end it completely. He states that the “government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free” because the house would not be able to stand. Both of their speeches were made because they believed in a better America and they used their words to help solve important problems.. Such as using repetition and parallelism to empower their speeches. Making their tone in such a way that it inspires the listeners as they speak. Whether if the speeches were long or short the meaning always stayed big. A strong theme that was used was freedom.
