LESSONS I LEARNED IN MY FIRST MILITARY ASSIGNMENT There are many lessons we learned from the life. Personally some lessons that had a great impact in my life. These lessons have helped me become a good leader, and helped me to use the good leadership principles in my early military life. I graduated from Sultan Qaboos Military Academy on December 17 1994. I have learned a lot of good information, and graduated with good skills of knowledge about military science and leadership. After my graduation, my first assignment was a platoon commander at the 1st Field Supply Company, and when I started to work at that company my first consideration was how to be a good leader, in order to lead my solders and instill good manners in them. I got an order to lead a team to transfer work functionality from manual to automated system, where others failed to do it. I set a plan for what I am going to do, which I learned from my first assignment in how to plan for the development, to be well organized and how to make things get done as planned, I believed that nothing impossible if you work hard. We faced a lot of challenges at the begging, but we kept working hard until we made it, within three months the systems started to work and all the requirements started to be generated through system. A good leader must be his solders man, and participate with his soldier, and teach them good manners. A humble leader must advice and caring about his soldier for better life. Smart leader must know how to make change in people and work, and always in going development. That is the wrong answer. Leaders should feel obligated to be the prime example and enforce the Army Values and Warrior Ethos not only thru their action on duty but also off duty. For example cutting edge to get the job done quicker is the wrong answer, it show that you don’t live the army values. It show that you have loyalty to you task, respect to the leader that told you complete the task, and the personal courage to do the right thing when no one is looking. Not only should a leader live the army values and warrior ethos while on duty but a leader should live them off duty.
Over my twenty-year career, the core aspects of my leadership philosophy have been constant while other parts evolved with me, as I changed jobs and responsibilities and while I matured and gained new perspectives. Mahatma Gandhi said it best, “You have to be the change that you want to see in the world.” In keeping with the military’s practice of conducting after action reviews after military exercises, I hope my written leadership philosophy will become a contract to keep me in check and ensure I “walked the talk.”

In order to run a successful organization, especially a good standing Army, there needs to be quality leaders within the organization. Leaders are artists, remaining flexible and adaptable in order to conform to any certain situation. Take your position seriously - whether you are new to the Army or a senior leader- your role is important and adds great value to the overall mission. I’m a firm believer in doing your absolute best at all times; don’t aim for substandard. Remember that it is okay to ask for help, it is okay to not know something, but you should always be striving to learn and improve.
Be aware of who is above you in your hierarchy structure. It helps avoid going outside of your chain of command and to eliminate any potential obstacles you may come into contact with. If at any time you feel your current leadership is not helpful or causing more problems than usual, you should ask to be lead by someone else who better suits you. Furthermore, a study made by Amit et al about leadership-shaping experience found that a group of soldiers who had more leadership experiences were perceived to be leaders compared to those who did not . This points to the fact that exercises in self-development and discipline were key to building leadership qualities. Leaders as mentioned before are role-models in society and when those leadership qualities are nurtured, the society as a whole benefits from them.

Therefore, army strategy to have a great leader is to choose people with high charisma since follower are always drawn to leaders with charisma.
