James Knox Polk, the eleventh president of the United States of America. Polk was born on November 2, 1795, near Pineville, North Carolina. Before he served as President from 1845 until March of 1849. James Polk had practiced law. At age 30 he won an election to congress in 1825. After resigning from Congress, in 1839 , Polk ran for governor of Tennessee. After that Polk finally became president. He was a hard working individual, that is why he was so successful during term as U.S president. Instead of you getting taxed for the quantity of the item, Polk decided to change it to being taxed for the quality instead. Polk set forth a plan to lower the tariff and establish the Independent Treasury. With the assistance of his Secretary of the Treasury, Robert J. Walker. The president and other congressional leaders established a new tariff bill in 1846, known as the Walker Tariff of 1846. When things got rough, Polk intervened directly and pressured members of Congress. Therefore, in July, they finally agreed to the bill the president had brought up. The other part of Polk’s program to have a Independent Treasury, also know as Independent Treasury Act of 1846, was designed to end the deposit of federal revenues in certain selected banks. Instead the president wanted to place all such money in special government vaults. After slowly considering the president’s proposal in the busy spring of 1846, Congress finally agreed to pass it in June. Polk just after his first term as president in March 4, 1849. Polk had retired. This was his intention before he even became president. Just as he promised he retired at the end of his single term, although he could easily have been nominated for a second term. He wrote in his diary that he felt "exceedingly relieved" to be free from public duty. Unfortunately, he was able to enjoy less than three months of retirement. That is the the least of any former President. In 1791 Hamilton convinced Congress to approve taxes on distilled spirits and carriages. Hamilton 's principal reason for the tax was that he wanted to pay down the national debt, but he justified the tax "more as a measure of social discipline than as a source of revenue." But most importantly, Hamilton "wanted the tax imposed to advance and secure the power of the new federal government." Congress designed the tax so smaller distillers would pay by the gallon, while larger distillers (who could produce in volume) could take advantage of a flat fee. The net result was to affect smaller producers more than larger ones.

Leonidas Polk was born in April of 1806 and grew up in North Carolina. He came from a wealthy family (Leonidas Polk) who had a bloodline of generals in the Revolutionary War. Along with being tied to the University of North Carolina, his family also had connections at West Point Military Academy. In the 1790s, the first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton and fellow Federalists wanted to protect the United State's economic future through several different means; namely, the creation of a national bank, maintaining good financial credit, and by developing a lasting economic system. The United States was in turmoil, still rebuilding from their recent detachment from Britain. The United States government was in shambles, its economy arguably in an even worse one. It was for that reason that president George Washington elected Alexander Hamilton to develop a sound economic plan for the United States. Hamilton and his fellow Federalists had many ideas for improving the economy; however, the Republicans or Anti-Federalists, were disinclined to agree with their federalist counterparts due to opposing views on government authority.

Polk ability to negotiate with other countries like england and new mexico and get Oregon and California this demonstrates why he is viewed as a successful president. But to gain Texas the United States had to fight mexico in a 2 year war from 1846-48 which the united states did end up winning but despite winning Texas this would prove to be a problem with the north and south fighting over the southern land. When understanding the significance of William McKinley and his developments in the economic maintenance of US society we come to appreciate the great advancements made by him in regards to the uplifting of American economy at the time. Once he had presumed the responsibilities of office, McKinley immediately turned his attention to measures for assuring economic recovery. McKinley was particularly passionate about keeping American investment within the country. It led to the Dingley Tariff Act of 1897 that protected manufacturers and factory workers from foreign competition and gave stability to the economy through the idea of ‘Protectionism’. The tariff continued for up to twelve years and became the highest tariff in American history.

A tax or tariffs are funds that are paid to the government that are added when something is bought that is considered valuable. Because of the Civil war, there was a financial burden on the country. In 1861, Congress reacted by implementing taxes on individuals. The first income tax started off by taxing individuals 3% making more than $800, while people who made more than that gave up a larger percentage.

Born in 1804, Franklin Pierce became the fourteenth president of the United States from 1853 to 1857. Pierce was not a very effective nor well-liked president. At the end of his term, the Democratic party had refused to choose him again due to his shortcoming and instead, chose James Buchanan as its new nomination. As a strong supporter of Andrew Jackson, Pierce also believed in a limited central government. His belief in a limited government combined with his inability to go against the strong supporters for pro-slavery caused him to be an ineffective leader.
Soon after, Tyler did become president, Tyler was sworn into office when he was 51 years old. As president, Tyler kept Harrison’s cabinet in place, but, all but one resigned after Tyler vetoed bills that were designed to create a new national bank. So, Tyler was without a party but was still able to complete many achievements as chief executive. In 1841, he signed the Pre-Emption Act, which was a Western settlement that allowed a person to stake a claim on 160 acres of public land and purchase it from the government. Two years later, the Seminole War in Florida (a dispute between the U.S. and British North American colonies over boundary issues) ended with the Webster-Ashburton Treaty.
