If you had the chance to have any three wishes granted, what would you wish for? In the stories ‘What of This Goldfish’ and ‘The Fisherman and His Wife’ two men were given a certain amount of wishes. Of course, the wishes came with consequences, and the characters had to have had a reason to wish of these wishes. There are many times humans act differently because of someone else. The outlooks of human behaviors depend on the negative or positive influences that surround a person. People act the way they are because of the external forces that affect them. Likewise throughout history, many authors and poets create their work of literatures based on the external forces. Often times, the message that these authors and poets reveals not only has universal themes, but also can connect to people’s life stories.
One major theme authors universally write their stories around concern the power of human relationships. Though writers may take different paths to communicate this, the strength that comes from these unique connections that exist between individuals resonates with everyone. Authors clearly articulate through a myriad of rhetorical devices that maintaining relationships is a fundamental part in personal growth and allows for a stronger sense of self. In finding companionship and comradery. people become capable of evolving and arriving at better understandings of who they are.
The environment in which an individual grows up in can affect life greatly. Our surroundings influence one’s personality, self-expression, and individuality, otherwise known as identity. Finding one’s true self is the most grueling stage of life and expectations of family and society make the process even harder. One’s true identity can sometimes clash with hopes of others, thus breaking tradition and/or family ties. Pressure to change will always be present, but staying true to uniqueness will prevail.
How others see you is influenced by material, social, and physical constraints. This causes a tension between how much control you have in constructing your own identity and how much control or constraint is exercised over you. How we see ourselves and how others see us differ in many ways, but is an important factor of our identity. “A Lesson Before Dying”,
The first way that his connections would help him because when some Jewish officials came to register some of the war prisoners so that they could be free, Vladek would tell the officials that Orbach was a friend that he knew that lived in Lublin. In the novel in page 62 to the top panels of page 63, it would start showing that he would get freed to local Jews and thanks to his connection with Orbach, this would later help him be with Anja and Richieu back in Sosnowiec. This demonstrates that his luck with being freed and knowing a local Jew that would later led him to be with his family again after being imprisoned by war. Another example of his connections making up his luck is his encounter with a Nazi soldier that was going to kill him but when the officer found out that he was a relative of Illustrious Spiegelman, he would let him go. In the novel in page 118 in the bottom panels, a Nazi officer would say, “Give me your ID papers or i 'm gonna blow your brains out.”
How do relationships with others show our true personality? The way we communicate with others, views how people see us. In the story “ What of this Goldfish do you wish?” by Etgar Keret’s. Shirley Jackson’s “ The Lottery” and Diane Glancy’s “ Without Title”.
The memories and the dreams did not stop rather it progressed; “then his memories passed into dreams, and in his fancy the past was mingled with what was to come. Anna Sergeyevna did not visit him in dreams but followed him about everywhere like a shadow and haunted him” (179). According to the story Gurov hardly communicates with his fellow men because " In the society of men he was bored and not himself, with them he was cold and uncommunicative” (172). Gurov changed his lifestyle by being more in the company of men. He was hunted by the love of Anna that he could not resist telling an official in the doctor’s club, "If only you knew what a fascinating woman I made the acquaintance of in Yalta!"
