The documentary “Chasing Zero” reflects on the importance of quality care and patient safety. From the video, a child presents with jaundice, but the hospital fails to recognize immediate treatment. As a result, the child develops further complications such Kernicterus, which results in brain damage from jaundice (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses, 2014). Unfortunately, there were many devastating instances such as this, which could have been greatly prevented.

There are several procedures that help to maintain this health and safety however they can all vary between settings for example, health and safety procedures will be slightly different and more focused on certain areas in hospitals and especially in paediatric ward compared to in drop-in centres where the needs and risk to service users are slightly different.

Having a nursing shortage is a big problem, which may cause many stressful conditions. The nursing shortage increases opportunity, but with opportunity, comes with some consequences. Job dissatisfaction can result in exhaustion, and injury if nurses work long hours in their stressful working conditions. Nurses would be more prone to making mistakes and errors in these environments. The patients can suffer from low quality care. This shows how stressed nurses are from being overworked. They work long, stressful hours that can put their body 's health at risk. This can lead to a nursing shortage because of nurses being dissatisfied with their jobs. With the upcoming election health care seems to be in talks again, just like with every election year, left sided candidates tend to lean towards a more equalized single paying system, where as the right wing candidates like to keep “America great” with it’s current marketplace system allowing more choice for Americans. Some might argue that a health care system for all would be costlier on tax payers; however, many studies show that a two-tier system would save American’s costs in a lot of ways. Healthcare employee safety is very important and should be a high priority. In the healthcare setting the employees must pay attention to his or her surroundings. This essay will include several objectives such as injury prevention, emergency readiness, and training. Keeping the employees safe is not easy while working in the environment full of dangers. Introduction: The goal of every nurse leader is to establish and sustain a healthy work environment for nursing staff. This must be a priority if nurses are to make their optimal contributions to caring for critical care patients and their families. The link between healthy work environments and patient safety, nurse retention and recruitment are well documented in the nursing literature. Nursing organizations like American Association of Critical Care (AACN) believe that all workplaces where nurses practice can be healthy if nurses and nurse leaders are determined to address not only the physical environment, but also the less tangible barriers to staff and patient safety; e.g. skilled and effective communication, collaboration among disciplines and effective decision making. Continuity of care, especially in the critical care environment is essential to overcoming the obstacles of missed communication opportunities, nurse dependence on a medical model for the plan of care, and multiple disciplines practicing in silos.

I have been working according to the work health and safety regulation to prevent the injury or illness at workplace or at clinical placement. During my first clinical placement I had the opportunity to put all the WHS theory I have learnt on simulation block into practice, included safe manual handling, the application of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), sharp products disposal, safe practices for the handling of blood and body fluids and other safety mechanisms. Therefore, when I faced any issue regarding health and safety at the clinical placement, I referred to the work health and safety

According to the World Health Organization (2004) “Patient safety is the absence of preventable harm to a patient during the process of healthcare”. It highlights the importance of safety in healthcare through the avoidance, curtailment, reporting and investigation of medical errors that often lead to adverse effects. An adverse effect can be said to be an injury which result from or is contributed to by medical management thereby prolonging hospitalization, treatment, monitoring and resulting in disability at the time of care and/or discharge.

Undeniably, the risks that occur as a result of medical errors are transferred to the patient. Furthermore, nurses are also at risk of losing their jobs because they can become the subjects of legal suits, especially when patient injuries and deaths are linked to medical errors. On the contrary, implementation of an effective nurse staffing becomes a remedy that will greatly benefit nursing as a profession.

One of the most important roles of a nurse is the patient advocate and work environments. During a patient hospitalization or visit, there are many things that can affect their life which could result in a negative outcome. These issues can be noted as verbal, physical and psychological. It is the role of the nurse to prevent these issues from occurring. Preventing of verbal, physical and psychological harm from happening to the patient is also considered of promoting quality and safety in the health care system. This is the method that the nurse practitioners can use to prevent this to be happened. Healthcare settings are very busy – we have to deal with multiple patients, multiple tasks and many distractions. Phones are typically ringing, family members want to speak to us, and alarms are alarming. Our thought process is interrupted and mistakes happen. For instance, take for example alert fatigue. It is a common contributor to error in healthcare. Constantly alarming monitors desensitize healthcare providers and over alarming results in the ignoring of safety measures that are designed to avoid error (Sittig, 2011). I personally observe this frequently in ICU. There is a cacophony of alarms, phone calls, and beeps. The overwhelming alarm at first soon becomes unheard or as users turn them off because they are alarming for nothing.

I am very fortunate to have worked over 17 years in the nursing profession. I currently work in the Critical Care Unit at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas. Recently, I have become concerned with the legislative impact on health care policies and I am writing in regards to the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Healthy Work Environments Initiative. Given your background in the nursing profession, I know you will be able to sympathize with the unhealthy work environments some nurses must face and the negative impact it has on patient safety and workplace errors. The AACN has identified a major area for improvement and this organization encourages nurses to play a role in developing and promoting healthy

From my perspectives, the role primary care doctor is important in the health care system. Primary care doctors acts as a “gatekeeper” in health service. As the entry point for most of the patient’s medical and health concerns, primary care doctors not only provides medications and treatments for patients regardless of their problems, they also regulate the access to specialists and more advanced yet costly procedures. According to the severity of patient’s situations and the origin of the problems, primary care doctors can decide whether referral to specialists is required. Also, primary care doctors can analyze to patients whether certain procedures or treatments are required. As many patients nowadays tend to come up with their own diagnosis
