In this day and age, many believe racism to be an issue of the past, when as a matter of fact, it is still frequently impacting peoples lives all around the globe. Unfortunately, many issues regarding racism occur in the sporting world. In Australia, it occurs most often in Australian Rules Football, or in the major competition, AFL (Australian Football League). It is a widely accepted idea that the players and spectators of a sport, rather than the sport itself have a direct impact of inducing racism within that particular sport. Relating to the AFL, the main offenders of racism are the spectators, who are commonly abusing players of different race to them.
As patriotic Australians we pride ourselves to be a nation that accepts and respects the beliefs of all cultures, but on this historical day majority of Australians tend to forget the true meaning behind the celebration. If you ask today’s society, what they did this Australia day mass numbers would respond with “binged on alcohol” and “indulged in a barbecue.” Consequently, this day cannot be called a national celebration when some of our fellow Australians are grieving while others are out celebrating an occasion they know little about. Giving due regard to the indigenous people and their mostly negative perspective on this issue should be a priority. A new date, not the 26th of January should be established, as rather than unite, it seems to divide Australians into different viewpoints.

Australia Day is one of the most unique national day’s in the world throughout history, celebrating the day of when our ancestors first arrived on the borders of Australia, in 1788. Rather than unite people as one whole though, the spirited outcome of this event isn’t what as anticipated by everyone and has divided the Australian society for good. And so it should be held at an alternative date, where Australian citizens feel worthy of their identity and not cheated by it. However, the celebration shouldn’t be adapted to like that of other commemorations like ANZAC day. Essentially, this day will always be a tragic memory for the indigenous and be viewed as the invasion of their homeland. Also, while it’s significant to note the ‘foundation day’ of Australia, many people say that there were many other good memories made after that that are just as or if not more important. Finally, ANZAC Day is often thought of a replacement but shouldn’t
Social Theories provides us with insights and explanations as to why people act the way they do. Sports is a human activity that involves physical skill and hard work. Sports is also governed by a set of rules and it is taken competitively. It is said that sports is taken seriously and is very important for athletes and even for the fans, some even say it is like a religion for them. Though not everyone in the society follow any sport, because they see that it has no relation to their lives. The connection of Social Theories and Sports is seen in how we see different kinds of human behavior and interactions of individuals; it can provide positive and negative outcomes. With the help of Social Theories we can grasp the process, patterns, values,
Celebration of culture for Indigenous Australians is imperative as a tool for defining and conserving their identity. By actively participating in traditional Indigenous culture in the form of games, students from diverse backgrounds can form an awareness and respect for Indigenous culture.
Throughout history, many events, objects and people defined change and continuity on Australian culture, particularly since the end of World War 2. In a time of heavy racism towards the Indigenous people of the land, Australians had created a deep and isolated relationship with Aboriginals. In 1996, a defining moment helped shape and change Australia’s popular culture for the better. At the 1996 Olympic Games located in Atlanta, Nova Peris was the first Aboriginal Australian to win a gold medal at this prestigious event. Not only was this an inspirational event, but it clearly showed a newfound respect and recognition towards the Aboriginals, and a continuity in the progress of breaking down the barriers racial prejudice have built between
Sports are a great way to bring a community together. However, sports have more to offer than just being a fun activity and a way to hang with friends. Lewis Lapham is correct in his assertion that sports represents more than trivial games between winners and losers; sports are deceptive and offer the illusion of hope, innocence, as well as lightness triumphing over darkness. H.G. Bissinger shows how these illusions affect a town’s reality in his book Friday Night Lights.
In the book chapter ‘ Understanding Australia’s neighbours: an introduction to east and southeast Asia’, Nick Knight briefly outlines the importance of Australia’s bilateral relationship with Asia in terms of political engagement, with the aim of foreign policy and trade. Drawing largely upon the main complications occurring with Australia’s sense of national identity and history . Knight accounts the comparisons between Asian and Australian societies, despite apprehensions and criticisms the Australian influential figures were keen to maintain a relationship in order to benefit from Asia’s economic, social and political spheres.
“In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year” claims Stanford Children’s Health. It’s definitely true that competitive sports can cause all sorts of injuries from big to small. The media teaches people simply that sports leads to horrific injuries and can cause stress, but what the mainstream media hardly discusses are the great benefits of competitive sports. While there may be some negatives to competitive sports, that’s just life, and to add on to that; there are plenty of benefits which are sure to override to media’s facts. Kids should play competitive sports because competitive sports teach children powerful life lessons, contributes to their social and mental stability, and because of the physical gain competitive sports provides.
Mental health is an important factor for a successful life. People have different perspectives on the impacts it can have. It all depends on how sports is used and seen. Team sports bring many random people, who probably do not know each other together, by practicing and participating in team activities. You might get closer to some teammates, making a forever lasting friendship. You feel relaxed when you're with your friends, and when you're doing something that you enjoy doing. However, one side reasons why sports bring many together and connect is maybe they might want the same goal at the end to win a event or make a meaningful memory with others. By participating in a sport, or multiple sports, it can have a positive impact on one’s
Sport for years has brought people together all around the world. Sport has the potential to unite people. The UN definition of sport is all forms of physical activity that contribute to physical fitness, mental well-being and social interaction, such as play, recreation, organized or competitive sport and indigenous sports and games. The Oxford English dictionary definition of sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. This shows us how sport is not just for competition, it is for fun and entertainment. Sports have contributed to the society in many ways. It is not all about playing the sports for physical benefits. As mentioned by Nelson Mendela ““Sport has the power to change the world,”
Sports provide opportunities to explore and develop young athletes. Young athletes can identify themselves apart from playing sports through connecting with others and building new relationships
Women’s competitions receive less recognition. The coverage of men’s sports on television, radio, or newspaper is much greater than women’s. In Australia, statistics were taken of the coverage of women, men, and mixed gendered sports to see which was covered more. Men’s sports were covered at over seventy percent in newspapers, radio and television. While women’s statistics showed less than eleven percent. Mixed gender sports are covered more than women’s. Since women are seen as the weaker sex they are not given the recognition they rightfully deserve. Many may think that women are of the weaker sex since this has been instilled in people’s minds for decades. However, both must receive equal opportunities in all aspects of life. The mere fact that there are numerous sources for this, shows that it is an issue that needs a new solution which can be started through simple
Sport is a unifier. Sport unifies teams, provinces, cities, countries and in some cases even the whole world. These games have the ability to put all problems on hold and find solutions to the most difficult situations. During these events we as spectators are able to see the athletes as more than just fellow human beings but as role models to society. Not only can sports unite countries around the world, but they can also bring individual sportsmen and women together as a team. Sport allows team mates to form bonds that teach them to function as part of a whole, which is also a worthy skill to have in life. These bonds formed sometimes not only exist during the game but off the field as well. Sports can bring strangers
