Great Gatsby Final Does money show how or who a person is? In this story a rich man named Jay Gatsby seeks to find his true love, Daisy Bauchan. However she does not feel the same way because of the past. You see, Mr.Gatsby wasn’t always rich. He did something called bootlegging alcohol and got his wealth from that. However, Daisy did love Gatsby at one point but he could not keep up with her needs like Tom does. In “The Great Gatsby '' money is a huge motivator to many peoples relationships, and outcomes which then leads to changing people's way of seeing others with and without money. This story uses money to motivate peoples relationships by showing that Daisy would rather have a relationship with Tom, than with Gatsby. Gatsby speaks about Daisy and states, “‘She never loved you, do you hear?’ he cried. ‘She only …show more content…
Gatsby stated, “ His fortune, we are told, was the result of a bootlegging business – he “bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago” and sold illegal alcohol over the counter.” (Fitzgerald 53). It doesn’t explain it in there but the reason Gatsby became rich is because he had so much love for Daisy. But Daisy only had love for a second. Once she found out he couldn’t keep up with her needs, she lost interest. So Gatsby did the next best thing. He got money illegally just so he can be in a relationship with Daisy. Crazy what money can do to a person. In addition, Gatsby stated, ““And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time.”(Fitzgerald 101). This shows how crazy love could make you. Making you spend your money like you have all of it in the world. He loves her so much and she loves his money. Sometimes you just have to let go and see the bigger picture because in the end all shall
Every step Gatsby take that involves money seems to literally bring him closer to Daisy. Gatsby wants to amaze and show off his luxuries to Daisy and he uses his wealth in order to do so. Gatsby badly “wants [Daisy] to see his house”(79) because he wants Daisy to see just how rich he is. He believes that this is what will bring Daisy back. This seems to work out for Gatsby because Daisy sees Gatsby house and she can’t help but cry “That huge place over there?...
However, Daisy was a rich girl while Gatsby was a poor boy, which made the couple socially unacceptable. He figures out that in order to get her attention, he had to have money. So, he made a fortune through bootlegging and held grand, expensive parties. He sacrifices everything for her, just for a chance of reclaiming the life they had. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby’s obsession with returning to the past ultimately leads to his death because he thinks that Daisy has not changed, he cannot get Daisy to admit she does not
He was successful very at getting money, but was never truly rich. Gatsby has always had his eyes set on making the most money he could, he never lived in the present. Since Gatsby never lived in the present he did things permanently. When Gatsby was around he never was really popular and didn’t have many friends; he decided to change that for good by making a lot of money.
Along with his fame and popularity, he uses the traits that people associate him with as a way to woo Daisy. Gatsby uses his money to prove that he is worthy of Daisy’s love because he is just as rich or possibly richer than her husband,
He spent years obtaining money to create a life that would exceed her expectations. Gatsby’s love for Daisy is what motivates him to gain wealth and status through illegal means ultimately leading to his downfall.
When Gatsby finally managed to get Daisy to his house he wanted her to realize that he was now not such a poor boy. Nick even noted that Gatsby had “revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes” (Fitzgerald 91). After his visit with Daisy Gatsby had gone to visit the Buchanan home, while there Gatsby said to Tom what he believed to be the truth that “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me!” (Fitzgerald 130) Gatsby thoroughly believed that money was the only thing that lay between he and Daisy’s relationship
As the story progresses, the distinction between those with “old money” like Daisy and Tom Buchanan and those with “new money” like Gatsby can be clearly seen. This unmistakable division within the higher class reveals that the wealthy require separation even among themselves to feel superior. Heavily implied by this line said by Tom, “ I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him and I wasn’t far from wrong.” (pg.133) it can be assumed Gatsby’s money came from participating in organized crime and bootlegging.
Gatsby himself realizes Daisy’s obsession with money: “‘She never loved you, do you hear?’ he cried. ‘She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me’” (Fitzgerald 130). The quote reveals
Gatsby spent their years apart motivated to win over Daisy by gaining wealth. In his eyes, gaining wealth became equivalent to getting Daisy. He stated, “her voice is full of money” (Fitzgerald, 2004, p.120). His life revolved around money and Daisy, who had symbolically chosen Tom’s pearls and wealth over Gatsby’s letter of love. He threw parties in order to attract her with his wealth.
This shows how desperate Gatsby is to get the fortune, risking the danger of going to jail. Not to mention that he wants to be able to throw parties all the time, which costs money; Hoping that Daisy would just wander in someday. “I think he half expected her to wander into one of his parties, some night,” went on Jordan, “but she never did” (P. 84) Since that never worked, he decided to change who he was and his
Certainly not for a common swindler who'd have to steal the ring he put on her finger" (Fitzgerald 133). Tom knows Daisy will choose comfort and security of money over real love. Daisy views Gatsby as her past without tom. Gatsby's wealth was always a dream while Tom's wealth was always reality. Daisy being with Tom will secure her a spot in the famous and respected "old money" society whereas her being with Gatsby she will be surround by people like him with "new money" who wants to be accepted by those with "old money".
He thought daisy would never leave him no matter what horrible things he did because she needs the money to live the life she has always cherished. This betrays him because she finds love in Gatsby and she can still live the wealthy life she wanted. The wealth corrupted everyone one in this story to think it brought happiness. Even
Gatsby says “Her voice was full of money.” This shows that he associated his love with Daisy to his pursuit of wealth and power. He wants Daisy because of the wealth that she represents. Gatsby wanted Daisy more than anything else. He could not move on.
In “The Great Gatsby”, Gatsby himself has set his focus on being viewed as this wealth man who did in fact come from wealth (even when he did not). He consistently portrays this man to hide the past and create an image for himself. He also pursues his dreams of winning over the heart of Daisy to create happiness. He did everything in his power to get her to notice him: moved to live near her, threw roaring parties in hope that she would eventually show up,
Unfortunately for him, Daisy only cared about money and status. Gatsby himself brought this up to Daisy and Tom, “she never loved you, do you hear?’ he cried. ‘She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me,”(Fitzgerald ch 7). This quotation further proves that Daisy only cared about status, and money, driving Gatsby into corrupt ways of making money.
