The Freedom Writers In the late 1700s, America was divided about becoming its own separate country. Some of the colonial people wanted freedom from Britain, while others wanted to remain loyal to the king. To encourage people to break away from British rule, writers would display works to show the benefits of becoming a separate country. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Paine presented the different types of freedom to the colonial people through their writing in hopes of persuading citizens to break from British rule. The influential writings of the above men ultimately led the way to uniting the colonial people against the British. In Franklin’s work The Way to Wealth, Franklin uses sayings from Poor Richard to explain financial situations. Franklin emphasizes in his writing how the harsh taxes the British impose on the colonists are unfair. Franklin also explains how it takes hard work to maximize financial freedom. He states, “There are no gains without pains” (Franklin 459). Franklin’s work made it easier for the colonists to understand the financial restriction Britain had on the colonies and how to overcome the restrictions to gain financial freedom. In addition to financial freedom, another freedom that paved the way to independence was political freedom. Thomas Paine was one of, if not the most, important writers on political freedom. In Thomas Paine’s work Common Sense, he explains the faults of the British Parliament and the assets of America. This work by Paine played a major role in the Revolution by influencing the colonists and showing them the need for political freedom. Paine also wrote other works to motivate and ignite the colonial soldiers to keep fighting for the freedom of America.
