The name of the book I read was called What Were They Thinking by Robert M. McMath and Thom Forbes. In this book he talks about marketing techniques that he has learned from selling over 80,000 new product innovations and idiocies. I am going to talk about some of the ways that he talks about to be a successful business man.
Go with the Flow
When Robert says go with the flow he is trying to say that if your sales arent doing good then you should never give up on a product. For example, Kimberly Clark, when she first came out with her brand "Kleenex", it was advertised as a cold-cream remover. The product was not selling good at all. When it was found out that people were using her item as a disposable handkerchief, they wisely switched their product advertising message to support nose blowing. Kleenex became one of the hottest selling products in the United States. Almost every home in the untied states had the brand of "Kleenex" in their homes. That proves that you will never really know how successful a product will be. No one in 1993 ever thought that the internet would become such an amazing thing in the world today.

In his book Robert says that nothing makes him more angry than to unwrap something that you just purchased and find out that it is less than the promise contained in the illustration, the name, or the advertising. If you are trying to sell a product you need to emphasize the positives about the product and hide all the negatives. You always have to put the best face on a product but you must not deceive the customer by showing them something that you cant or wont
Over the years, there has been an ongoing debate about “street smarts” and “book smarts” throughout the world. Many people side with either or for their own personal reasons. Although “street smarts” has developed a poor reputation which pushes people to neglect the positive aspects of this particular way of learning. In the article, “Hidden Intellectualism”, Gerald Graff evaluates the structure schools use to teach literature. He explains that intellect is not only found in the academic form of thinking.
Joe Foss has great responsibility because, he always knew what he needed to be done. He was always thinking one step ahead then what was planned. Tom Brokaw wrote a book called The Greatest Generation, about all the war heroes that took place in WWII; one of them mainly being Joe Foss. Joe Foss was always trying to do something and once said, “Combat is dangerous. It tends to interrupt your breathing process”.
Thank You for Arguing, written by Jay Heinrichs is a novel written for the purpose of understanding, and employing rhetoric in one’s writing, speeches, and everyday life. Heinrich introduces different types of rhetoric used to persuade people, Heinrich cites examples of these to further explain his the different types of rhetoric. Throughout the introduction and first part Heinrich analyzes different types of rhetorical arguments, and further explains them by providing real life examples, Jay heinrichs establishes the importance of rhetoric in the introduction of Thank You for Arguing by exposing its rich history. heinrichs then goes on to explain how vital rhetoric is in everyday life by giving examples stemming from his own life. Prior to the start of the war in the Philippines, Ross Hofmann was stationed at the Cavite Navy Supply Yard. The experiences the author shares include operations as a supply officer in preparation with a possible war with Japan. One unique experience is the hauling of food to storage areas. One of the author’s co-workers named Red, points out that “the smaller buildings are our storage warehouses. Some hold hardware and spare parts, but the bulk of them hold provisions”.
Today’s innovation is the internet, and the internet is proving to be just the same. Carr says that the attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and socialization of modern day society, or rather the lack of, is to the blame of the internet. Although Carr creates a strong argument, and does nothing but continually back up his thesis with good facts, but it is his actual thesis that I disagree with. Carr constantly states historical and scientific facts that show how the internet is following a path from the past.
In the Ted talk on "Battling Bad Science", the speaker Ben Goldacre tackles the lack of critical analysis by the public of scientific claims by debunking popular medical claims and exposing methods of borderline falsifying evidence behind claims. Science is a unique subject varying from all others in many rights, particularly when it comes to the critical analysis of its claims by the general public. Unlike politics, law, history, etc., science is given huge leeway to make uncontested claims by the public, where as in other fields their claims are scrutinized before being accepted. On the contrary, people willingly expect dodgy “scientific” claims which often contradict themselves.
In “Blind to Failure”, Erik Weihenmayer has many good character traits. Particularly he is extraordinary, brave, and very committed. To begin, Erik proves himself to be extraordinary when he decides to take on a great challenge, disregarding his disability, and his reasoning was “I knew that if I went and failed, that would feel better if I didn’t go at all. ”(277) I consider this to be extraordinary because not only does he climb Everest, but he is also blind.
111). The main reason why this is one of my favorite aspects of this book is that it encourages “reasonable down-selling” (Spoelestra, 1997, p. 112). I think that too often salespeople try to only upsell customers, and that can end in a bad experience for the customer, or not sale for the organization at all. I believe that if all salespeople abide by this rule, then organizations will be more successful, as customers will actually be purchasing something they actually want and will enjoy, which increases the chance that they will be a repeat
The issue on whether religion and science can work together has been debatable for centuries. Neil DeGrasse Tyson in his article the Perimeter of Ignorance argues that science and religion cannot coexist. In his article, the author explains that religion is all about the Bible and the Bible primarily focuses on the explanation of the origin of the world. He puts forth the point that this concept is far different from what science is and that they do not complement each other. This essay intends to prove that religion and science can work together with no issues.
In They Say/ I say, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein informs the audience of the basic moves in academic writing through text, illustrations, and templates. Their main model in this book is they say/I say template, in which it helps writers to develop their arguments by paying attention to what others are saying, and engaging with a response. The authors goal is to demystify academic writing, and return it to its social and conversational roots. The authors want the writers to engage in the ideas of others. These concepts from this book, will help make a stronger, supportive argument.
Executive Summary: There were three brands of garbage bag rolls: Limp-o-Lixo (Ad-Lider), Dover Roll (Fort Roll) and Koleta (Colmag). Ad-Lider Embalagens, SA was planning on introducing a new product line of handled garbage bags named as Fecha Facil. They wanted to know the preferences of target audience so that the impact of such attributes can be used for the deduction of success rate for Fecha Facil. Since a huge amount was invested into this product, thus they wanted a good return as well. The research conducted was comprised of mainly individual and focus group interviews in the market to be tested.
The internet could be the most valuable invention that was made in the modern age. With the force of the web individuals basically can do anything. From learning how to cook to building a car. The possibility is endless. The modernization of the internet can have positive and negative effects on the world.
According to the article “Created Equal”, Milton and Rose Friedman discusse three different ways that are considered to be equal. It includes equality before God, equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. They also believe that the “freedom preserves the opportunity for today’s disadvantaged to become tomorrow’s privileged in the process, enable almost everyone, from top to bottom, to enjoy a fuller and richer life.” Finally, Friedmans conclude that a society that puts equality before freedom will get neither, and those that put freedom before equality will get a high degree of both. From my point of view, I do agree with Friedmans that equality of outcome is in clear conflict with liberty which government gets more power and getting bigger.
In 1988, the Internet was opened to the public. At that time, not many people were aware of what a huge impact the Internet would have on the lives of future generations and cultures. While it was at first widely accepted by many users because of its astonishingly convenient and unlimited access to information, the enthusiasm for the Internet has more recently diminished and even disappeared in some cases.
