What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a dramatic film with points of comedy created in 1993. This film takes place in the serene and rural, but fading, town of Endora, Iowa. Gilbert Grape, a twenty-four year old store clerk, is assumed with the obligation of monetarily providing for his family and caring for his developmentally disabled brother Arnie. Gilbert has two sisters, Emily and Amy, the aforementioned Arnie, age seventeen, and his morbidly obese mother Bonnie, a widower of seventeen years. Gilbert’s father who committed suicide following Arnie’s birth, which initiated Bonnie’s battle with depression and gorging.

Janie begins her first marriage with Logan Killicks questioning what love is, and convincing herself that she will love Logan eventually. She tells herself, “Nanny and the old folks had said it, so it must be so” (21). Janie has another important conversation with her grandmother not long into her marriage. Janie expresses her concerns about not loving her husband, but what she gets in response changes her. Nanny tells Janie, “If you don’t want him, you sho oughta” (23).

Dally A rock-hard hood who never backs down from any challenge. Dally is a character in the book “Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton. The Outsiders is a book where a ragtag group of greasers band together and overcome victories, tragedies, and above all, build an even stronger bond of brotherhood. This story begins in the town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Ponyboy(our main character) is walking home from the movies and gets ambushed by a large group of Socs(Sociables-the “popular/rich” clique).

In the film What’s eating Gilbert Grape directed by Lasse Hallström a character who changes is the protagonist, Gilbert Grape. Gilbert experiences the troubling feeling of being trapped in Endora by the heavy responsibilities of taking care of his family. Throughout the film, Gilbert’s pessimistic outlook on life at the beginning evolves into a more opened and positive attitude. These changes occur when he meets Becky, who forces him to re-think and fight against his strong conscience that is not letting him move on. This is important because it enable Gilbert to deal with all his problems and look into the future.

Symbolism in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape Do you ever feel like you are falling? Like you are dreaming about falling and when you do fall you wake up? But it’s not a dream and you actually are falling? The Grape family lives in Endora, Iowa they are a far from normal family who are struggling through life ever since their father committed suicide. Gilbert Grape is the main character he is 24 years old.

When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, many lives were lost. There were 2,335 deaths and many more were injured. In the novel, Under the Blood-Red Sun, Graham Salisbury tells about a Japanese boy who lived through Pearl Harbor which was one of the worst days in American history. The author taught the reader about bravery, different customs of the Japanese people, and not to judge people based on their race. Tomi shows bravery through tasks that happened to him throughout the novel..

The manner of perception demonstrated by the director, Lasse Hallström, of “What Eating Gilbert Grape?” is established towards people with mental disability but specifically autism. Arnie Grape who is played by Leonardo DiCaprio is a 17 year old boy with autism and shares everything with his older brother and carer Gilbert Grape who was played by Johnny Depp. Arnie elucidates basic behavioural and social aspects that a person with autism would have. Hallstrom interprets a person with autism as a minority by clearly separating the town of Endora, Iowa from not just Arnie but the entire Grape family. The media manages to incorrectly interpret the behaviour, social acceptance and understanding of people with a disability and this movie directly

Jack has changed greatly, over the course of William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies. Crashing onto an island without adults and having to survive put a strain on all of the boys, but Jack’s personality altered the most due to this experience. He went from living as an ambitious choir boy, to being a vicious, brutal, beast. Many things changed Jack on the island, but most of all, he created the monster he became.

Flagg’s character Evelyn Couch is seen as a believable character, because the reader gets a bit of background on who she is and why she goes to the nursing home. In the novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Evelyn is described as a “forty-eight year old . . . [who] had gotten lost somewhere along the way” (37). After her children left to college Evelyn felt as if she did not know what to do with her life anymore, because before it revolved around her family and taking care of each one of them. In the late 1980’s women began to have more job opportunities; however, in Evelyn’s case she was already too old to go out and work for a company without having went to college.

“The ways in which the characters in Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A raisin in the sun, are affected by racial imbalances and respond to the injustices engendered by such inequities are solely influenced by their gender.” I agree with this statement to an extent. Although it is correct that gender plays a big role in this play, there are other factors to consider. Context:

The purpose of my essay is to explore how different social backgrounds and the social norms that follow affect the personality of two fictive characters and encourage them to break out of their station to find an identity. The protagonists Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye and Tambudzai in Tsitsi Dangarembga’s novel Nervous Conditions are both victims of social norms. Therefore, the foundation of this essay was to analyze the character’s social background, which has influenced their personalities, behavior and aspirations, and consequently their opposing actions against society.
