With these ideas in mind, why should standardized tests declare if a child passes, if these common factors are relevant in possibly every child? Besides these factors, one important factor messes with a child quite frequently. Test anxiety is one of the most common reasons for why a child might not pass on a standardized test. Investigation provides us that test anxiety is a disorder in which people experience stress and feel nervous when taking an exam (“Test Anxiety”). The affect this disorder can have on people is unreal.
Do you struggle with taking tests? Do you wish that you never had a take a test again, well so do I? Standardized testing is a topic that many people would argue. Some people believe that all kids should be required to take these tests and that standardized testing is a good thing, but others argue that it puts too much pressure on kids. I believe that it puts too much stress on kids and it doesn’t show their full potential.
Although, some say standardized testing is beneficial to the way students learn, statistics show that this is simply not true, standardized testing adds unnecessary stress on students, suppresses their creativity, and limits the creativity of teachers. To begin, standardized testing puts a lot of unhealthy stress on students and gives them even more problems to worry about. Many students find standardized testing to be extremely stressful and can lead to faulty habits. According to the author Quinn, Mulholland: "One student couldn’t handle the stress of all of these tests and broke down in the middle of one. “She had a complete meltdown,” Neely-Randall told the HPR.
Depending on how desperate a teacher is for good test scores, inappropriate preparations can be made before testing, sometimes even to the point of cheating. While having standards and a uniform teaching model, high -stakes testing is generally detrimental to the education of America. The importance of these tests has become the be-all and end-all of high school. The accountability of the testing will follow the student throughout his or her educational life. Moreover, for students with learning disabilities or who process information differently”(Beaupré). They say that the tests are not fair for students with learning disabilities and recent immigrants ,that do not have much understanding of the culture, because some questions are culturally based, so therefore students do not understand the questions and they do not get them right which affects their performance. Also also schools are cutting off material that is not in the test, forcing teachers to ignore content that is not in the test.
There is no perfect way of testing; however there are ways that limit the mind’s creativity and ability think freely. Even with this being known, public schools around the country are having to utilize standardized testing in order to place a score to their student’s intelligence. By using this system, the students don’t develop the capability to answer the open ended questions offered in society or real-life situations. These programs aren’t preparing them for life, but rather a multiple choice survey. Programs such as the ACT and SAT are extremely impactful on a student’s future; however students aren’t analyzing the text and formulating a response, but rather deciding what bubble they haven’t chosen in a while.
They try to improve their score because everybody else has a better one than them so they feel they are not good enough. Should teachers be quitting due to the stress of testing? No, because they don't really go through as much stress as the students do when they are testing and the teachers should also be able to handle these things and not just quit because they think it is too complicated(Occupytheory). Does it affect the way teachers teach their classes? Standardized tests do affect the way teachers teach because they can only teach certain things and not what they think that the students might need.
First of all, students should not be paid for good grades due to not needed pressure. The NEA claims : many teachers say, “Paying students for good grades leads to practical problems in their classrooms, including pressure to inflate grades and conflict with students and parents.” This means students are more likely to be in bad moods and have bad relationships with parents and classmates. If some kids get money and the rest don’t, arguments will break out. In a classroom, students are supposed to be respectful to each other in order to have and efficient working environment. The effect of this is, students will be stressed and annoyed or angry with them, if unable to raise test scores.
Tests already stress students out and now a bigger one comes with more stress. Students also have barely enough time to finish the tests, well most students anyway. To begin with standardized tests manifest stress on the student’s mind. Stress in a student testing can often result in unclear knowings of the student’s strengths and weaknesses. Many students get confused on simple questions and that can result in unclear answers.
