5.1 Heavy metal level in white leg shrimps
5.1.1 Concentration of heavy metal in white leg Shrimps at local market in Selangor.
Aquatic organism are commonly known for the ability to accumulate chemicals and considered to be bio indicator of marine environment (Yunus, Zakiuddin, Effendi, & Rizal, 2012).
Based on the result obtained from the analysis of copper, cadmium, lead and zinc from white leg shrimps, the result shows that copper, cadmium, lead and zinc level in the shrimps from the local market in Selangor are relatively high with the highest reading are from Banting wet market for copper level, while highest cadmium and lead level are from Sg. Besar wet market and Shah Alam Section 16 wet market respectively and highest zinc level in shrimps are from Serendah local market. Paneus vannamei or its common name; white leg shrimps is one of major farmed shrimps in Malaysia as an alternatives to P.monodon to sustain shrimp aquaculture (Mazuki Hashim, 2008). The high concentration of heavy metal analysed might be due to fact that fertilizer are in inserted into the shrimps ponds after water jets flushing into the pond (Hashim, 2005). This plankton are needed as shrimps feeding beside pallet feeding that been given (Hashim, 2005). Biocides are also inserted into the pond before harvesting the shrimps(Boyd, 2002). Biocides consist various substances such as chlorine compound, copper sulfate and various insecticide and herbicide(Boyd, 2002). Thus, these might be the reason
