During the booming of industry in the U.S., Americans were experiencing new inventions. A life changing event that happened to americans is the steel company. Creating the steel company in America would create new jobs, but also bad treatment of workers. The reason for the mistreatment of workers was owner and richest man in America Andrew Carnegie. How did andrew canriege get all this money? andrew used his workers well earned money; later Carnegie used the money for charity and himself. Andrew Carnegie was not a hero, he took money from his worker, and later used that money for charity and himself. The steel company was important to America, but what would the steel company be without the workers? ANdrew Carnegie reduced wages of worker to 20 cents. The workers has strikes for example the Homestead Steel strike. Carnegie was not grateful to his workers instead he reduced the pay. THis showed how Carnegie manipulated money. In other words carnegie fortune was not pure. Many say that work and success is earned, nut in Doc D shows Andrew being two face and manipulating money. The author of the cartoon in Doc D believed Carnegie isn't a hero. If Carnegie would not take so much money away from the workers , he would have still been rich. But instead he decided to do the wrong thing and take away more money from workers. Heroes …show more content…
So, why did Andrew Carnegie give away money to charity but couldn't even pay his workers right. To his community and people he gave money and charity to he was a great man. Carnegie Obviously covered up how he really was. Carnegie blindsided everyone to believe he was a hero. The community couldn't see the reality of how carnegie had obtained all the money to donate. Doc C shows all the donations, University of Scotland , Princeton University and etc. But to think of how all the money that was meant for workers but was taken to make Carnegie fortune
Andrew Carnegie was a hero in some people 's eyes , not so much in others . That’s why everyone has their own opinion. In this essay you will read one reason someone might think he’s a hero , and two reasons why he is not a hero for the rest of the people. What that means is that this paper mostly leans on that Andrew Carnegie is not a hero and you will read why . Andrew Carnegie was a very wealthy man.
According to Andrew Carnegie, men of wealth should have to provide for the less fortunate and should set a good example. The men have to provide all the necessities for his family. Also the men of wealth had to give back to the community.
It seems that everything Carnegie did (concerning Carnegie Steel) was in some form caused by greed, and his low wages and frequent cuts were not the only actions that portrayed it. The defense’s strongest argument was Carnegie’s philanthropic efforts. By the end of his lifetime he gave away $350 million dollars, mostly to fund the creation of libraries and music halls (“Andrew Carnegie’s Story”). At face value, such an investment would seem extremely generous. However, as Carnegie was giving away millions of dollars to help the future, he was letting those who worked for him suffer under wages as lower than $2.00 a day.
In this composition, he addressed that the three ways for wealth to be distributed are give it to the family, use it for public service, or to administer it throughout the life of the possessor. (Wealth and Its Uses 31) He later goes on to explain that, “The only mode of producing lasting good by giving large sums of money is from the millionaire to give as close attention to its distribution during his life as he did to its acquisition” (Wealth and Its Uses 31). From all the uses that he listed, it is clear that he believed most strongly in giving large sums of money for the people. Carnegie used dedication and strategical thinking to build a fortune and use it to help others.
During the Gilded Age, Andrew Carnegie became a wealthy man due to his control over the manufacturing and distribution of steel. The Carnegie Steel Company and its use of vertical and horizontal integration allowed Carnegie to control the production and distribution of his steel, which made him into a wealthy industrialist (The New Tycoons 2014). In his article “Wealth”, Andrew Carnegie argues for the wealthy to give back their wealth to the community by providing “public institutions of various kinds … [to] improve the general condition of the people” (Foner 30). He uses this article to promote his Gospel of Wealth idea and provide his interpretation of the changing American society. Carnegie’s Gospel of Wealth stated that “those who accumulated
In the Gospel of Wealth article, Carnegie argues that the best way on helping society was to help improve people themselves. Carnegie did not believe that the rich simply give the money directly towards the poor. Instead, he wanted to set up intuitions for the poor to allow people to help there self. According to Carnegie, “ [T]he main consideration should be to help those who will help themselves; to provide part of the means by which those who desire to improve may do so...” (Carnegie, 1889).
The fact that he was able to be the richest man on the planet at one point doesn 't make him a hero, he is a hero to the future of this country. On june 30 1892 the homestead strike occurred. Carnegie refused to give them better work conditions and high pay. The workers revolted against that but lost the fight.
One of the most prominent captains of industry, Carnegie, donated a large sum of money to charity at the end of his life because he believed in the Gospel of Wealth, as he stated in 1889 (Doc C). Carnegie also helped make America more efficient by using vertical integration. According to E. Levasseur, efficiency was
His workers worked twelve hours a day, seven days a week for barely anything, and then he tried to implement a 30% pay reduction. While he sat and did nothing, earning millions, his workers worked tirelessly for hours upon hours and barely earned enough to survive. He was a Robber Baron in the sense that he took advantage of his workers. Andrew Carnegie was a Captain of Industry. He donated $9.5 billion dollars to charities, libraries
Andrew Carnegie could have let his employees keep their wages and worry about donations later. Taking money away to invest it somewhere else is not helping, because the people
Finding this company, brought even more success to Carnegie but he wasn't done yet. In the next decade, most of Carnegie's time was put into the steel industry. Carnegie developed his own business called Carnegie Steel Company which was his biggest accomplishment. In the book “Andrew Carnegie” by Joseph Frazier Wall it states that Carnegie Steel Company was a steel producing company used to manage business at his steel mills in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area in the late 19th century (Frazier, pg.311-312). Carnegie's business got more and more intense which lead to him to build more plants around the country, using technology and methods that made manufacturing steel easier, faster cheaper and more productive, kind of like a snowball effect.
Carnegie believed in the value of books and learning, and eventually he would display the traits of the modern entrepreneur. In 1848 Carnegie came to the United States with his family, and started working from job to job while learning about business and about the railroad from a mentor, and one of the railroads top officials at the time, Thomas Scott (biography.com). Carnegie left the railroad in 1865 to focus on other interests, mostly on his business and investments. Carnegie created the Carnegie Steel Company which revolutionized steel production and eventually made him the richest man in the world at that time, and by 1889 Carnegie Steel Corporation was one of the largest corporations in the world. Carnegie was able to control the aspects of steel production like the raw materials, ships and railroads for transportation, and the coal fields to fuel his machines (biography.com).
Carnegie was considered a Robber Baron for many reasons. For example, he gained huge profits because of his workers low wages. In the excerpt, “Who was Andrew Carnegie,” the author said, “his steel workers were often pushed to long hours and low wages.” Workers worked in harsh conditions and received no benefits causing them to live in poverty with scarce food, clothing, and shelter. Workers were tired of the low wages and decided to go on strike.
Andrew Carnegie treated his workers horrible and in result was an unjust person, and was an awful, greedy, and treated people like
Andrew Carnegie’s views are considered ethical because he gives back to society voluntarily. To help people get on their feet, Carnegie donated millions of dollars to society and hoped that they do something good with the money. Once they’ve gotten to where they need to be, they become stable and hopefully soon, wealthy. With the wealth that the people earned, he believed that they should return the deed and give back to the community.
