My client Calvin Smith is not guilty due to reason of insanity. Mr. Smith is schizophrenic, considering the fact that he was able to hear ersatz noises, he has anosognosia that results in him denying his mental illness, as well as schizophrenics are known to have voices that tell them to do certain things- such as harm others, and themselves. With this information, the allegation is correct, he did murder the man. Although, he is not in the right mind to know it was wrong. This is because Calvin Smith is schizophrenic.
To start off, Mr. Smith has been distinguishing abnormal sounds, these sounds are something normally people do not hear. First, a quote from my client, “Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven

In the first place, while he was killing the man, he was satisfied as he was committing the action. “I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done. But, for many minutes, the heart beat on with a muffled sound. This, however, did not vex me; it would not be heard through the wall. At length it ceased. The old man was dead.” Without a doubt, he was satisfied knowing that he was going to kill the man, as he was smiling to know he was starting. He even took the time to listen to the heartbeat- until it stopped. That means he enjoyed knowing this man was going to die- and that’s something a violent schizophrenic would be able to enjoy. Furthermore, he was relieved once he was dead, as his head would not “bother” him anymore. “. Yes, he was stone, stone dead. I placed my hand upon the heart and held it there many minutes. There was no pulsation. He was stone dead. His eye would trouble me no more.” Knowing this, he was glad he was dead, as he was relieved of the burden that the man was alive with the “vulture” eye. Having killed him relieved him of stress and that is not normal for other people. His schizophrenia supported the fact that he was relieved after killing him. Finally, after killing the old man- he cleans up after himself, as he cut the man up in pieces. “There was nothing to wash out --no stain of any kind --no blood-spot whatever. I had been too wary for that. A tub had caught all --ha! Ha!” Connecting with that information, after happily killing the old man, he had to clean it up so nobody would find out. He dealt with the blood, the body, and everything else. Without any disgust or hesitation- he seemed okay with what he did. In summary, Calvin Smith has done violent and gore-ish things to the old man. Many schizophrenics are known to commit such things, and
How Jeff Smith landed in jail is an enthralling parable of a spirited and ambitious young man looking to bring positive change to the nation. Jeff Smith was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1973 to a middle class family. Smith attended Ladue high school and then went on to graduate from UNC and Washington University with degrees in political science. In 2004 a Democratic Primary was being held for a Missouri U.S. congressional seat, and Smith decided to run. Smith at the time was a virtually unknown figure in the political world, but with the help from a young, bright, and driven campaign staff, he decided to run against a the scion Russ Carnahan.
Sufferers often show regular intellectual functioning and are able to display affection. This explains why he is “stressed” when ask to be a witness. After he killed John and ran out of the house he began to get paranoid and show anxiety. He shows the anger from feuds with John Hossack and, after the trial by his “violent” tendencies. This evidence makes him obviously capable of killing him.
Unlike serial killers with psychopathy they manipulate the system to benefit their own means to an end. Allowing this disorder to fall into the insanity defense would feed into their disorder in that it would allow for the manipulation of the system to
You may think Mr.Smith was most likely insane when he admitted to two police officers that he killed the Mr.Johnson, dismembered the corpse, and hid the body parts under the floorboards. Let's say you think someone is insane what do you think of when you think of insane. I’d believe you would think of someone who has huge mood swings, excessive worrying or anxiety, hallucinations or delusions, and inability to cope with daily problems and activities. You will most definitely see in my essay that Mr.smith was not insane but just a murderous sane man. First of all, Mr.smith was a very intelligent man and planned every single move and procedure of this murder precisely , which is the exact opposite of uncontrollable or impulsive behavior.
It was a brutal and violent murder in which he suffered a painful death. One example is when he says, “Can I say in twenty minutes what was building twenty-one years and ended in twenty seconds? What are you waiting for when all I can tell you is his name?” (455). IM knows it’s absurd and acknowledges the impossibility of conveying the full complexity of a man’s life and death in a brief speech.
“Louder! Louder! Louder! It is the beating of his hideous heart!” - says the narrator in Tell Tale Heart.
While what he did was horrible and insane-like, the narrator did this process very sanely and put lots of thought into it. No absolute insane person would spend days and days watching someone sleep, or acting perfectly normal around victim just so they could tike their kill perfectly, even though watching someone sleep is an insane trait. He was very cautious in this, “But you should have seen how wisely I proceeded -- with what caution -- with what foresight, with what dissimulation, I went to work!” and proved to be quite patient, “It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed.’’ So he couldn’t have been totally insane, right?
In this paper I will be applying the psychological theories to serial killer Ed Gein. Ed Gein was a prolific serial killer in the 1950’s. He murdered and robbed graves for body parts to make furniture and clothing. He was apprehended in 1957, where he stood trial and was institutionalized. Edward Theodore “Ed” Gein was born August 27th, 1906 to George and Augusta Gein.
Chicago and other major cities remain in the news, as they continue to struggle with high murder rates. In fact, the city of Chicago has witnessed a 50 percent increase in its murder rate in only a one year period, and this area is not alone. Thankfully, cities across America and noticing violent and property crime rates remain at historic lows. The new adminstration has noted the increase in murder rates, but needs to also consider that other crimes on are the decline, which is always a good thing.
While this may be the case, many people may think he was fully aware of what he was doing. This can be proven wrong because the narrator states, “I loved the old man. He had never wronged me... I think it was his eye yes, it was this!”(2).This quote reveals that it was not the old man at all that had made him want to murder him, it was his eye that was his motivation.
The case of Jimmy Dill versus the state of Alabama, the government’s denial of Dill’s defense led him to his tragic execution. In spite his mental disability and his experiences such as sexual abuse and lifelong struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, he did not receive the adequate legal assistance due to his financial issue, the court had not enough information, as a result, they declared him guilty. Dill did not have enough money to hire a better lawyer. Instead, he hired a lawyer that only costs a thousand dollars. It was not Dill’s currency that made him poor, according to the article, “The Crisis of Counsel in Alabama” by, Equal Justice Initiative, Alabama has a low compensation rate.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the term mockingbird symbolizes innocence in a person. In the novel it focuses on the fact that innocence, represented by the mockingbird, can be wrongfully harmed. There are two characters: Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley that are supposed to represent the mockingbird. In the novel, Tom Robinson is the best example of a mockingbird because he is prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. Also, he was judged unfairly based on the color of his skin in his trial.
“Insanity: n. mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior” (Hill). This definition describes the narrator, a sweet yet deadly man, of “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe seamlessly. (Appositive) A few prominent characteristics demonstrate the narrator’s insanity, and those include his motives, his actions, and his thoughts.
One can fight the evil and the good we do in this world as long as we are completely aware and understand the things we are doing. Shakespeare believed that “madness was a disease of the brain, and could be cured by medical means, aided by judicious care and management” (Reiss 2005). They also believed that mental illness “often had a moral ctiology that is, it had roots in environmental, spiritual, or psychological disturbance” (Reiss 2005). “Lamb to the Slaughter,” “She told herself. So I’ve killed him.
As a result, the narrator is insane and should not be prosecuted. To start off , the eye drove the narrator to insanity, which led him to take the life of the old man, The narrator does not know right from wrong. In the story, the narrator said that “For it was not the old man who vexed me, but his evil eye”(Poe). This quote from the passage proves that he is insane because he is deciding to kill someone over his “vulture eye”. A sane person would realize that killing someone over a eye is a silly, wrong thing
