John Crinnion 4-24-17 Ms. Haag English Racism has been a big problem in America all throughout history and up until now. The case of Tom Robinson in “To Kill a Mockingbird” raping Mayella Ewell was racially charged. Mayella said this because she came onto Tom and he denied her. There was choke marks of hands all the way around her throat and Tom only had one movable hand, his left hand got caught in a cotton gin. There was marks on the right side of her face meaning that Tom would have to have punched Mayella with his bad hand. Although, Tom was clearly innocent, he was put on trial and proven guilty. The decision of whether Atticus should have defended him is questionable. …show more content…
In Bruce’s article he talks about how after the Scottsboro boys were proven guilty in the original trial, bigger powers came in and took over. Slowly they were all proven innocent and released. Although, this might be a reason to fight back then, it was pointless, because the men’s lives were already ruined anyway. Four defendants were released from jail in 1937. One of the boys escaped prison and fled to Michigan, where authorities refused to arrest him. And the last of them, Andy Wright was finally freed by the state of Alabama in 1950. They had already spent years in jail and it affected them very heavily. One of the boys was so mentally scarred, (Roy Wright) that he joined the army and when he came back found his wife with another man, he killed his wife, then himself. Most of the boys spent most of their lives’ in and out of prison due to their poor mental state. Getting into bar fights, and all sorts of trouble. These girls went on like nothing happens after ruining these boys’ lives like it was nothing. There was tons of these cases and this is just one of the many which were decided biasedly. What happened to these boys was not right, but it is not fair to have someone cause a huge problem with his neighborhood and family, to defend them. It was practically a lost cause. Tom Robinson was so confident in him getting proven guilty, (although he knew he was innocent) that he risked his life …show more content…
One reason would be that there was always a shot that Atticus and Tom always had a shot at winning. But, the odds of them winning were way too low. There was practically no shot at them winning, and Atticus should not have started a problem that would harm him and his kids. You could also say that if he was truly innocent that a higher power like someone in the government would have stepped in and had more trials. Then, tom might have eventually been released, and proven innocent. But, even so, Tom’s life would have never been the same anyway. He would be mentally scarred for life. Tom would be in and out of jail. Also, we would have never known, because he had such little confidence and heart, that before his last appeal, he tried to escape. Tom had to have known that there was practically no chance of him actually escaping. He ran out right in front of the guards, and was shot down. Tom must’ve known that all eyes would be on him, and that there was no chance of him climbing over the fence fats enough with his one good hand. While, there might have been a shot if Tom had confidence in him and Atticus, we will have never
Tom was accused of rapping a white women. Atticus did his best to him. Even though
They had spent years in prison! They had beaten the Jim Crow Laws. The Scottsboro Boys were innocent young men. Charlie Weems suffered from severe eye infection. Leroy Wright was not so fortunate.
Another reason he could be proven guilty is that most of the city is against him. From the the beginning of the book the reader can see the many people did not like Tom. At one point in the book there was a mob was formed to kill Tom. He could be innocent. There
I truly believe Atticus chose the right decision to stand by Tom Robinson and defend his innocence. Even though so many disagreed with the decision he didn’t let their opinions affect his own thoughts. He was very committed to racial equality and wasn’t afraid to show it. This shows that Atticus is a good person and won't let anybody take that characteristic of his
The jury came to the conclusion, with no evidence the offense happened, that Tom Robinson was guilty. Based on the grudges and resentments of those men, Tom Robinson was never going to receive a fair trial with the jury given. ANTICIPATE THE DEFENSE
I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this county in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.” (p. 83). Furthermore, he states that this case is one he is affected personally by, and that even though he knew that they were not going to win, he agreed because, “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (p. 84). This example reveals that even though Atticus knows he is going to lose, he wants to do everything in his power to give Tom the best chance in case justice prevails.
despite the unwavering dedication of atticus finch in To Kill a Mockingbird the absence of evidence and a moving courtroom speech tom Robinson is convicted of a crime he likely didn't commit , tom Robinson was convicted of a crime he didn't commit because the absence of evidence , tom Robinson is eventually killed, and the jury ruling causes both those who advocated Robinson's conviction and those who were convinced of his innocence to question their notations of justice and fairness . Toms death is virtually unnoticed except in the colored folk and a racist Mr.Underwood who says “likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children.” (https://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature/t/to-kill-a-mockingbird/summary-and-analysis/part-1-chapter-1).Tom Robinson tried to climb over the fence to exscape the jail but was killed by the gaurds. atticus helps the children get through the fact that tom robinson is dead for a crime he likely didn't commit by describing to them it is just the way the state of alabama works.
Atticus 's strong sense of morality and justice motivates him to defend Tom with vigor and determination, giving it all he 's got with one mission in mind. He wants the people of
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the term mockingbird symbolizes innocence in a person. In the novel it focuses on the fact that innocence, represented by the mockingbird, can be wrongfully harmed. There are two characters: Tom Robinson and Arthur “Boo” Radley that are supposed to represent the mockingbird. In the novel, Tom Robinson is the best example of a mockingbird because he is prosecuted for a crime he did not commit. Also, he was judged unfairly based on the color of his skin in his trial.
The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee and the article “Scottsboro Boys Trial” both contain controversial court cases. For “To Kill a Mockingbird” a black male named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. In the “Scottsboro Boys Trial” nine young black men and teenagers are accused of raping two white females named Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. Both cases transpired in the 1930s in Alabama. This is bad for the accused as racism was at an all-time in the 1930s especially in the deep south.

Tom was always kind to Mayella by helping her with things to do because he felt bad that she was always working. He passed one day and she asked him to get the box on top of the chiffarobe, so he got on the chair and got it then she put her hands around his leg, but she claims that he threw her down and raped her.
Based on all the information provided at the trial of Tom Robinson the jury should have found him not guilty. But in the south, white people were racist towards people of color. As a result of this Tom Robinson was found guilty with no evidence to prove that he was. In this trial, the jury was racist and prejudice towards Tom Robinson and that lead to him being found guilty of a crime that had no medical evidence at
