Stephen F. Austin was born on November 3, 1793, in southwestern Virginia. Five years later, his father, Moses Austin, moved his family to southeastern Missouri. He was sent to Connecticut for schooling around the age of 10 or 11. After this, he attended Transylvania University, which is in Lexington, Kentucky, for two years. Young Stephen was fairly successful, so much so that he even began worked alongside his father, Moses, in various business ventures. They continued to work together until Moses 's death in 1821. It is actually kind of ironic, because he died from pneumonia, too. Stephen continued his father 's colonization project, which would wind up leading him to his push for the independence in the state of Texas. Stephen F. Austin
