Banned Books are books that are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means. Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech.
Banned Books: Good or Bad? Should students be exposed to the real world through books or should they be shielded from it? There are many people who agree that banned books should be banned because it is ethical, and valid and it prevents students from emotional stress. On the other side of the argument, people argue that students have the right to read whatever they want. Many books are challenged and banned in schools because they contain inappropriate content or bad language; however, some people have a strong belief that these books are worth reading because they represent ideas of free speech and other important lessons that students will need throughout their lives On the pro side of the argument, there are many reasons why some people support banning books in schools.
Why are Books Being Banned? There are multiple books around the world being banned. One reason books should not be banned is because books can teach a lesson. Another reason is that every book is written and published for a reason, if the publisher did not think the book was worth something or could have taught something, they would not have taken the time to publish it. Also that books can be encouraging and inspirational.
The book sheds a tear as it is banned by administration for students to read. The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned for summer reading for incoming sophomores because of its “explicit” content. After high school, out in the real world, life experiences are not censored or banned to protect you. You must experience life and all that comes with it. Just because a book that was written many decades ago may have bad words in it, doesn’t mean that it should be withheld from the students.
There are multiple reasons why parents are banning books. First, this text states, “Children should not be exposed to sex, violence, drug use, or other inappropriate topics” (Procon.org). To explain, parents are banning books from schools because they do not want their children to be exposed to these inappropriate topics. Moreover, banning these inappropriate topic books would be a great deal for parents and their children. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum. If you really want a book not to be read by an adolescent, banning the book will often have an opposite effect. Although it contains sensitive topics and harsh language, The Secret Life of Bees should not be banned in high schools because students are not only mature enough to handle these issues but should, in fact, be exposed to them in an educational environment to help in the development of their maturing minds. Being exposed to course language at too early an age can often have negative effects on adolescent development. Profanity is inappropriate in a school setting so why should students be assigned to read a book that contains it?
Should art be censored? Throughout history, many have felt the need to remove or suppress material that they consider to be morally or politically objectionable, such as books, films, or other materials. They feel that these materials should not be taught in schools or shown in public museums. These people believe no one should be subjected to something that may be against their teachings or beliefs. Others, however, do not feel that these or any works of art should be suppressed.
Great literature can open discussion about values and morals. Reading such texts can spark discussion of issues like racism, bigotry, and sexism. Reading can teach individuals about topics they have never experienced before. However, in Francine Prose’s essay, I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read, she argues that using literature to teach outside values is wrong because it takes away from the art of the text. Though I believe that books contain important topics that can spark discussions of values in classrooms, I agree with Prose that teachers shouldn’t use books as a way to explicitly teach students outside values.
Books are being Censored and We need to stop it!
