Life can be hard when you have to manage two lives. College athletes are living the life as full-time students and full-time athletes. This can be a very difficult task for college students. It is my position that college athletes (also sometimes called student athletes) should get paid while others might say that they should not be paid. I believe they should be paid because with their school life and athletic life they don’t have time for jobs. These athletes are bringing in fans to watch them play which brings in money, so why don’t the athletes get their share?
Being a college athlete is a full-time job itself. In the article “Playing College Sports: A Long Tough Job(2014)” by Chris Isidore, he states “the shocking demand on the time of
If you were a college athlete, would you be satisfied with the NCAA and universities making tons of money while you know you were the reason they make so much in the first place? Do you think the NCAA should pay college players? College athletes should be paid because they bring in so much money to the colleges, universities, and NCAA. They put so much time and work into that sport that they barely focus on school. Most college athletes only go to school to have a better chance of becoming a professional athlete for that sport, especially in basketball and football.
Paying College Athletes There are several reasons why college athletes should receive a form of payment. The athletes always seem to be practicing, which means that they are almost always busy, leaving little time for anything else. Additionally, they have to go to their classes and study in order to participate in that particular sport. In contrast, giving the athletes money could potentially be a bad idea. Some athletes might receive more because their sport may generate more money.
They have other necessities that basketball, football, and baseball just don’t pay for. College athletes should be paid because without being paid it stops them from jobs, and it damages their living conditions. When people need money they look towards careers and jobs but in order to get money they need to maintain time for these things. In college student athletes usually maintain an over exhausting schedule. They may wake up early to work out before classes than prepare for practice, go to their classes, actually go to practice, than a
Therefore many college athletes are forced to pay out of pocket for certain items not covered on scholarship such as clothes, food, and gas. This is hard for many college athletes since themselves or their parents do not have the money for the extra items. A selected few athletes will get a chance to bring their family out of poverty and make a great living in either the NBA or the NFL. But for the not so lucky ones that end their careers at the collegiate level they should receive some money in order to pay for the expenses that any college student would need to since they do not simply have the time to get a part time job while enrolled in college and participating in their specific sport. The benefits that the players can receive from receiving a salary are endless.
The film “Schooled” makes many arguments to support the claim that the NCAA is taking advantage of college athletes. One way the NCAA has the ability to control these athletes is by giving these student athletes the title of amateurs. This title of amateur says that the athletes will be playing for the love of the game and not for money. This also means that the athletes will be offered something priceless in exchange for their playing abilities, which is a free education. During this time as an athlete these students are not able to persue any other kind of income since all of their time is taken up by participating in their sport and followed by school.
Over the past few years, the idea of paying college athletes has been a very hot and sought after topic to talk about. Many people desire and strive to one day be good enough at a sport that they can get a scholarship to continue their athletic careers. There has been many questions circulating in regards to if collegiate athletes should be paid to play for universities. Gaining an education and degree for cheaper than everyone else attending college should be more than enough to keep athletes playing for colleges. College athletes should not be paid to play their sport.
College students should be paid for their work because they have to deal with the stresses of being both a student and an athlete. College students themselves are already very stressed, with the American College Health Association finding that 63 percent of college students report feeling overwhelming anxiety and 42 percent felt so depressed it was difficult to function (Improving College Students’ Mental Health). With a sport on top of this, which as previously mentioned takes up more than 40 hours a week, college athletes have to put in a lot of work during their time at
College athletes deserve to be paid because they are the only ones not being paid in the college sports industry. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) generates eleven billion dollars annually, some of which could, and should go to college athletes. “USA Today reported last year just how much money the top 10 coaches in college football made. Nick Saban from Alabama topped the list earning roughly $5.5 million in 2013 alone” (Seibold). The coaches are making millions of dollars and the players aren’t.
NCAA has various views on college athletes getting paid. On NCAA.org, they push for more success in academics than in athletics. School work will be put before the time spent on the court to ensure that they know their main purpose for going to that specific college, according to NCAA. For the people who like to give their opinions on the situation, the past years have seen good days and bad days in where as people, even fans, think that college athletes are somehow not given enough benefits. NCAA states, Most of the money made off of the athletic program doesn’t go to the people that actually make the profits rise.
One reason is that the top 3 college football teams in 2005, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and the University of Texas each generated more than 60 million dollars for the school that they didn’t even make any of. Only the people associated with the college and team are getting paid not even the people that actually play for the team. An additional reason is that many of these student-athletes are poor so they wouldn’t be able to get a job and make money while they’re in college because playing sports occupies 40 hours of their week. Which is the amount of hours somebody works a week at an average job. Therefore, many of these college students won’t even be able to eat and may be starving.
In 1910 the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States, the original association for making rules to help govern college athletics, became the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This was the beginning of a dynasty. A few years later the NCAA began to organize national championships for various sports, with the most popular sport being basketball. Because of all the attention college sports started attracting the NCAA decided to allow universities to give out athletic scholarships to deserving athletes in 1957, which only further increasing the popularity of college sports. Since Basketball was the most popular sport in college at the time the NCAA decided to expanded the tournament in from eight teams to thirty-two in 1957.
Taking a look at the average college student, should they be paid for what they are studying? Probably not. Then why should college athletes be paid? They shouldn 't get paid just because of their athletic ability. They shouldn 't be paid because they are students, not professionals.
The million dollar question; should college athletes be paid? This is an immense debate, but if you were to ask me, I would say yes, college athletes should be paid. There are a plethora of reasons why college athletes should get paid. College athletes should get paid because of the amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school. There are a myriad of reasons that people can argue the opposite way, but, the reasons they should get paid definitely outweigh the reasons they shouldn’t get paid.
Are they students or employees? They spend more time with the sport than in school. Student athletes should be acknowledged for their performances. College athletes should be paid to play because they bring money into the school, advertisement, and they perform the same tasks of pros. College kids bring in thousands of dollars every game day.
