Why Courage Matters: The Way to a Braver Life is a book written by John McCain. He wrote about his favorite stories of normal individuals. These individuals have done incredible things have done, risking everything to defend the people and principles they cherish most in huge acts of courage. This book shows many different ways someone can be courageous in many different situations throughout time. The first person he wrote about is Special Forces sergeant Roy Benavidez, who fought in Vietnam. In his second combat tour, he was monitoring a twelve man reconnaissance patrol, three of whom were his friends. As soon as the helicopter they were in touched the ground, they got ambushed by the enemy. Soon, four of them, including the team leader, were killed and the other eight of them were so badly wounded they were immobile. Benavidez jumped from the helicopter and ran to help his comrades, getting shot in the leg, face, and head as he did so. When he got to them, he began treating their wounds, calling in for the helicopter to get closer to his spot. He got his comrades into the helicopter one or two people at a time. Before getting into the helicopter himself, Benavidez went to retrieve classified documents from the fallen team leader, getting shot in the stomach and shrapnel cutting his back in the process. He was shot several more times but continued to fight. For SIX more hours. By the end of it, he was bleeding profusely, his intestines were spilling out of the wounds in his …show more content…
was a very courageous man in US history. Even though he did not fight in a war in a different country and help his fellow soldiers like the others I have mentioned, he stood up for what he believed in. King was a Baptist minister and and social activist who was leader in the African American Civil Rights. He played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation in the South as well as the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He gave his famous “I Have A Dream Speech” in 1963 and he received a bunch awards, which included the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. . . because it guarantees all the others.” -- Winston Churchill. “We are taught to understand, correctly, that courage is not the absence of fear but the capacity for action despite our fears,” -- John McCain. The stories of the huge acts of courage in this book John McCain wrote were very inspiring and extremely amazing. They have inspired me to stand up for what I think is right and for the people I care about no matter what others think or what the consequences might be. Why Courage Matters: The Way To A Braver Life is an excellent book that everyone should read so they know the different ways they can be courageous and do what is right. I am very happy and very thankful that my parents had this book and suggested it as a book I should read. The individuals mentioned in this book are fantastic and their stories of courage are interesting to read and should inspire anyone who reads them. Having the courage to stand up for what is right and the people we care about is a very important quality for humans to have, and the stories in this book are good examples of why that statement in true. On the back of the book, there is a quote that I now love: “We’re all afraid of something. Some have more fears than others. The one we must all guard against is the fear of ourselves. Do not let the sensation of your fear convince you that you are too weak to have courage. Fear is the opportunity for courage, not proof of cowardice. No one is born
Courage is presented in many ways such as writings, paintings, speaking up, and previous sayings. A wise man, Muhammad Ali, once said, ”He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life”. To put it differently, it explains that if you don’t have the courage to stand up for what you believe in, nothing will change. The interview “Transcript of Full Joseph McNeil Interview” and the story “The Friday Everything Changed” both show this specific view on courage. This interview and story both show that if a person didn’t stand up for not just themself but also for others, the rules wouldn’t change.
What is courage? The dictionary defines it as, “the ability to do something that frightens one”. But the belief that someone is doing something to frighten another seems inaccurate. We’ve all grown up knowing courage as an intangible fire that only comes from within and it helps guide you when you’re feeling doubtful or scared. This type of true courage is displayed by Piggy from the novel, Lord of the Flies, Martin Luther King Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail and Tim O'Brien in the short story, On the Rainy River.
To find courage during tough times people have to believe in themselves. Courage will lead individuals to take action against discrimination. One specific example that supports this theme is how on Page 198-199 Henry was displaying courage to run through bullets and bombs to get to every soldier. When Henry had
For Teddy Roosevelt’s quote from earlier, his definition of courage is going to keep going when you don’t have the strength to do so. Tim O’Brien describes courage as a complex of emotion that is not always easy to understand. My personal opinion of what courage is and what it means to me, is to do something “heroic” that someone goes out of their way to do. An example of this would be, if you’re driving around and you see a family of ducks trying to cross the street. Instead of just driving past them, if you were to get out and stop traffic so the family of ducks could cross I would consider that
Courage is said to be one of the most important characteristics a person can possess. We all admire the ones that put their jobs and lives on the line. They are not afraid to go against what the human society believes in, and some put their lives on the line to protect their loved ones’ back home. Robert F Kennedy stated in Profiles of Courage, that “Courage is the virtue that President Kennedy most admired. He sought out those people who had demonstrated in some way, whether it was on the battlefield or a baseball diamond, in a speech or fighting for a cause, that they had courage, that they would stand up, that they could be counted on (Kennedy ix).
Within Tim O’Brien’s novel, each character has a different idea as to what courage truly means. In the short story “On The Rainy River,” Tim faces the moral decision of whether or not to join the war. Being the stubborn man he is, Tim believes he is too good for the war, all the while opposing war in his liberal nature. He faces a dilemma in which he can either flee to Canada and evade the war, or accept his draft notice and go to war. This is illustrated as Tim states “Right then,
Courage is shown through actions of people. Through the adventure of Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, by, Mildred D.Taylor Cassie Logan shows a lot of courage by standing up for what's right. Cassie had courage when she had to stand up for her little brother, Little Man and then again during the fight with her rival Lillian Jean. Cassie showed that she can be sassy, she’s a very outspoken girl, and that she loved her friends and family. Even when equality meant nothing to everybody else but her, she still believed in it.
Elie Wiesel showed the importance of courage not just during his life occurring memory but during our everyday lives, he shows and gives examples of how courage could be the savior to your most difficult times.
Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but who conquers that fear.” Through the exploration of this unit, many characters have shown courage. More specifically, “Transcript of Full Joseph McNeil Interview” written by Newsday, “The Terror” by Junot Diaz, and Amelia Earhart best exemplify the quote by Mandela. In the story “Transcript of Full Joseph McNeil Interview” helps us understand the quote that Mandela said.
Courage has gone through many changes. It has been altered throughout races, cultures, religions, sex, and time. However, the core values of courage has always remained parallel. It is difficult to explain in words the meaning of courage, like describing a color, but everyone knows what courage is, how it feels, and how to perform it. In Harper Lee’s
In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout, Calpurnia, and Atticus stand out when courage comes to mind. These characters show courage in many unique ways with different situations. In the early 1930s, in the deep south, racial discrimination was a huge conflict, for example, the Jim Crows Laws were in play, and it legalized segregation between blacks and whites. Courage isn’t always shown in situations, but simply throughout growing up.
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear” (Nelson Mandela). This quote by Nelson Mandela reminds me of Atticus in the story To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus had enough courage to overcome any obstacle that stood in front of him defending him, his family, and Tom Robinson. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee many of the characters have similar traits.
“You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor” said Aristotle. Courage is an act of bravery one does that is frightening yet they still persevere. Courage is found in many different situations in the modern world like in members of our military, law enforcement, and many others ordinary people performing courageous acts to help better our society. Everyone wants to have courage since whether in music, Hollywood movies, fairytales, or books we are told courage is one of the most important attributes that can turn an ordinary person into a hero.
Courage is Earned! Courage can't just be said it has to be shown. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Mr. L.T. Morrision is the most brave, loyal, and kind person you will meet. Mr. Morrison showed courage by standing to the Wallaces, he moved Kaleb Wallace's car off the road, and when he stayed with the Logans even though he could get hurt Mr. Morrison’s actions proved that he knows what is right and he is going to stand up for that no matter what. Even though his parents were killed by whites, he stays calm and knows exactly how to deal with the situation.
Cornel West discusses courage in many aspects. In the first section, he talks about how it takes courage to examine yourself. Often times, we are quick to judge others on their decisions and beliefs. However, when the tables are turned around, we cower when having to criticize ourselves. In order to help fix the flaws in our system, we need to be able to critically think about ourselves.
