As the Japanese forces were considered the aggressors of the conflict by the Allies and Japanese veterans alike, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified. Their aggression previous to the bombing was demonstrated through the attack on Pearl Harbour, which led to America’s involvement in World War II. The attack was not one born out of vengeance and was not strategically logical, whereas there was a reason behind the bombing of Hiroshima, that reason being that the Japanese military would not agree to the clauses presented in the Potsdam Declaration. This declaration was given to the military officials as an invitation to surrender before the first bombing, providing ample time for them to make a decision to hopefully end the

So, we were fortunately able to attack when we needed them. President Roosevelt declared war on Japan on December 8th. Germany and Italy allied with Japan, and they declared war on us too. On August 6, 1945, the United States Air Force dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Thousands of people died in the initial explosion, and many more died later from radiation exposure. Three days later, the United States dropped a bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. Approximately 120,000 citizens died. On August 8, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and invaded Japan, Japan formally surrendered to the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union on September 2, 1945.
On the clear mornings of August 6 and 9, 1945, the first atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagaski. Gigantic clouds of ominous dark smoke stained the sky, signaling the end of a seemingly incessant war. Americans and Europeans rejoiced throughout the world; many lives were spared from the brutality of continuing the war. Although this was an extremely hard decision to make and the results were devastating, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a military necessity. To begin, America had already seen how ruthless and cruel the Japanese could be.
It was a calm August morning in the year 1945, and citizens were out living their lives as normal, getting groceries, playing at the park, and walking to work, little did everyone in what was the beautiful town of Hiroshima know, there was an atomic bomb right above their heads. The United States wanted no part in this war until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, which resulted in the U.S. entering the war. “Wartime propaganda portrayed Japanese soldiers as uncivilized and barbaric, sometimes even inhuman” which resulted in intensified animosity toward the Japanese. To stop Japanese advancement, the U.S. focused on air strength to have air superiority over Japan. The U.S. later figures out that “German scientists had discovered how to split uranium atoms”5 which will ultimately lead to the creation of the atomic bomb. To end this once and for all, the U.S. decides to target the City of Hiroshima as it was the headquarters of the Japanese Second Army and the epicenter of Japanese communications and Nagasaki was chosen as it was the epicenter for producing war materials and contained Japan’s largest seaport.
Even though dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed thousands of Japanese citizens in a matter of seconds, it was still justified. On December 7, 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, a naval base on one of the Hawaiian Islands, thus plunging the US into the biggest war the world had ever seen. President Harry S. Truman decided to use the atomic bombs to save American lives by not invading Japan. American soldiers were able to return to their wives and children since they did not have to fight in the war any longer. The war ended just six days after the bombs were dropped.
WWII was close to an end with the Allied forces winning, however Japan would refuse to surrender to the U.S. That was when a new weapon at the time, an atomic bomb, was in the hands of the U.S and was experimented with. The bomb was launched at a city in Japan called Hiroshima and demolished it. This issue of new technology affected the people of Hiroshima by causing many deaths and everlasting destruction, similar to WWII. Document 2 states how the city’s rivers were filled with corpses of people desperately seeking water and destroyed buildings. The people of Japan were wondering how a single bomb could do that much damage considering a standard bomb used in war could never be that powerful.
Building up to the mid 1940s, Japan’s resentment towards western civilizations grew in response to their forced trade relationships. After militarily taking over parts of China, Japan decided to strike the United States before they could respond to Japan’s belligerence. With the attack of Pearl Harbor, Japan pushed the United States to officially join the Second World War. Fear from the attack towards the Japanese and existing racism lead to the internment of the Japanese citizens of North America, which led to hostile relations between those of the Japanese and the Americans. Pearl Harbor created an overwhelming fear amongst the citizens of America of the Japanese.
As a result of Japan bombing Pearl Harbor, and the United States suffering the lives of nearly 1200 crewmen, afterward not responding to the attack immediately, we were bound to return soon enough recharged and ready for war. Merely 4 years later, the summer of 1945 as the conjuring of the bomb began, The United States finalized their combative weapon to defeat Japan entirely. This weapon became the most powerful yet, an atomic bomb that no country has ever anticipated. The atomic bombs “Little boy, and Fat man” destroyed, “wreckage of the city, in gutters, along the river banks, tangling tiles and tin roofing, charred trees”, without any doubt, “instantly, 70,000 Japanese citizens were

Japan planned to expand their land and gain resources- which led them to invade China whom was an ally of the U.S. In result, the United States cut off the supply of oil to Japan. On December 7th 1941, Japan’s air force did a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor because that is where their military base is located.
Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor is by far one of America’s most remembered events in history. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese dropped bombs on the American base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
