Problem statement

This study has been conducted in Cité Attlee Government School. It has a population of around 100 Students and 25 staffs. Students attending the school come from the area, that is, Cité Attlee, Camp le Juge, Cité Joachim, Cité la Brasserie and Forest Side. Most families in this region are nuclear families and single parent families. Most students attending the school are from single parents, or in some cases, in the absence of both parents, they live with grandparents, or close relatives. Education for them is not a must. Learning, for them, starts when school starts in the morning and stops with the sound of the closing bell. There is no follow up of what has been done at school, once they reach home. Creole is a relatively young language which was born from the mixture of different languages, connecting people who came from different cultural and linguistic horizons. It has been, for a very long time, considered as a dialect. But over the years, this has been evolved from a French patois into a language that is being used by a majority of the population every day. Over the recent years, Kreol Morisien has taken an important swipe into the educational sector.

Kreol Morisien has been introduced in primary schools as an optional language. This step from the Minister of Education has unleashed resentments, misunderstandings, and anger from most teachers, parents and other concerned stakeholders. Though Kreol Morisien is the mother tongue of more than 70 % of the population, it has not been welcomed by most. Many reasons have been put forward for this discontentment and some are listed below.
