The mysterious murder that puts Adnan Syed behind bars is beautifully described in Serial, a podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig. Koenig shares her findings as she looks to crack the case. To find answers Koenig uses logical thinking; however, she becomes clearly biased as the search ensues. As different pieces of evidence surfaced the case, Koenig had to become logical about what side to believe. This is shown when Detective MacGillivary asks Jay, Adnan’s so called “friend” the reason for lying about where he first saw Hae’s dead body. In an early interview Jay stated that he saw the body near Edmondson Avenue; however, he changes that statement to Best Buy in a interview conducted later on. After analyzing this Koenig stated, “This is nonsensical. When he told the detectives the Edmondson Avenue version, he was already deeply associated with it. And if there were cameras at the Best Buy parking lot, wouldn't that help his story?” (Koenig “Inconsistencies”). Koenig is clearly struggling to believe Jay’s part of the story, because of how detailed he described all the other components in the his story. Koenig believes it would seem more beneficial for Jay to say Best Buy, because it only helps his side of the story. One can respect the way Koenig analyzes information she …show more content…
In Episode 2, “The Breakup”, Koenig herself even feels her biases towards Adnan, as she states, “He was working at his job. He was headed to college. About two weeks after his arrest, he gets an orientation packet from the University of Maryland. I don’t think he was some empty shell kid who betrayed his family and his religion and was now left with nothing and conjured up a murderous rage for a girl that broke his heart.” Koenig has heard great things about Adnan’s character; therefore, she has a hard time believing that he is guilty of such a
Adnan Syed is a 36 year old who had been convicted of first degree murder at the age of 17 on February 28, 1999. Adnan’s friend Jay Wilds testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae Min Lee’s body back in 1999, but Adnan Syed mentions he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Adnan was convicted with evidence of his cell phone call logs, Asia’s letters to him, and Jay’s description of the route they took during the day of Hae’s death. Adnan Syed is granted a new trial. Not only has there been mistrials, delay, and not enough evidence but also there has been a conviction towards Adnan resulting with doubt after more than 1 decade later.
Murder Case Against Adnan Syed In 1999, a murder case spiked the enthusiasm of the community of Baltimore, Maryland. Hae Min Lee was the victim of this unforgettable murder which brought together three main suspects: Adnan Syed, Jay Wilds, and Don; however, Don and Hae had only been together thirteen days prior to the murder. This rose suspicion in the case but for some reason was not analyzed as much as it should have been. Don did not have a solid alibi during that day, but he was thrown out the window.
The prosecution case against Adnan Syed was mainly based on the testimony of Jay wilds, who said he helped bury Hae Min Lee's body. Jay's testimony was supported by the cell phone records that placed Adnan on the site on the Day Hae Min Lee disappeared. According to the prosecution, the evidence sayed that Adnan had a motive to Kill Hae, because he was jealous and possessive of her. However, there are inconsistinces in Jay’s testimony, which has changed multiple times over the years. Some people also claimed that He was pressured into providing false testimony by the police.
She also stated, “That same night the detectives go get Jay at the video store where he works. It’s actually a porn video store, which, come trial, Adnan’s attorney will stress with relish at every opportunity” (Koenig). These
Jay had given false information and should be considered a suspect. He
In fact, in interviews with police Jay’s’ statements changed. First he claimed that that Adnan picked him up from his house and they went to Westview Mall. However in the second interview, he said they went to Security Square Mall. (Bondar) Also the autopsy report even brings into question Jay’s testimony that Adnan showed him the body in the trunk and then he helped him bury the body.
The plot: a good ol’ case of “who dun it” . As Koenig 's 12-episode podcast unfolds we learn that Syed 's case is greatly fumbled at every step of the
These people say that since Hae broke up with Adnan and that was enough reason to want her dead. However, Adnan was a smart kid who would realize that killing someone for breaking up with you is not a valid reason. Adnan was not hurt enough to kill Hae; he was devastated when she died and he didn't know about it when he was told. Also, they say that Adnan had enough time to kill Hae. What this opinion fails to take into account is that Asia saw Adnan at the library around the same time of the murder and she was never used in court as an alibi (Koenig, “The Best Defense is a Good Defense”).
When the cops first bring Jay in on February 28th, they talked to him for about an hour before the tape went on. Then, on March 15th, the second interview. Jay signs his initials to an official explanation of rights form at 3:15 p.m. Then the tape starts.” She brings evidence to discredit Jay and the detectives in the case.
However, the beginning ends with detectives interviewing Jay, an acquaintance of Adnan, who claims that Adnan repeatedly spoke about murdering Hae, and called him when he had supposedly
They were supposedly such good friends. Hae’s friend Aisha said that she was paging her like crazy.” (Source A) This behavior exhibited by Adnan at the time of Hae's disappearance cannot determine whether Adnan is guilty of the crime, however many try to link the two together. This is like saying because someone didn’t cry at a funeral, they killed the person.
All of the points that Jay had made were able to be confirmed through either people or records of some
Relationships, lies, murder, conviction. These are all aspects that come into play when talking about the January 13th, 1999 murder of high school student Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed, Hae’s 17-year-old ex-boyfriend was convicted of her murder in 2000. The problem with this is that the only evidence the state had to convict Adnan was the stories told by others, specifically someone named Jay who was with Adnan for some of the day Hae went missing and had possession of Adnan’s car and cell phone. He claims Adnan made him come pick him up after the murder was committed and assist him in burying Hae’s body.
Pride and Jealousy are very powerful things! Some people will go to the farthest limits to preserve their own ego and selfish desires. The Serial Podcast by Sarah Koenig is about the very complex murder of Hae Min Lee on January 13th, 1999. Many different people are brought into the Hae Lee case but the one that sticks out the most is Adnan Syed. On the day of January 13th, 1999 Hae Min Lee was strangled to death by Adnan Syed with the assistance of Jay Wilds.
Finally, I would like to look at a podcast called Serial. The first season of Serial follows the murder of a high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999. After searching for six weeks, her body is found buried in the local park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan, is arrested and charged with her murder. However, Sarah Koenig, host of Serial, believes there is something fishy about the case from the start.
