The Revolutionary War: How it all began The Revolutionary War was a conflict with many causes. Several reasons of the Revolutionary War include the taxing which the British implemented onto the colonies to repay their debts from the French and Indian War; the Intolerable Acts which closed the Boston Harbor and added a tax on tea; and Great Britain’s continued insistence for leadership of the colonies. The war had many important contributors and battles. John Hancock and the Battle at Fort Ticonderoga stand out as some of the most important. The British needed money from the French and Indian War. They taxed the colonists to collect this money. The colonists were annoyed at the British because they didn’t feel they should have to pay for the debt which Great Britain had. The colonists were also upset about the taxes because they did not have representation in Parliament and did not have a say in what Parliament did. …show more content…
Soldiers were allowed to live in colonist’s homes and needed to be fed. If the soldier’s needs weren’t met then there would be consequences for colonists that didn’t meet them. The Intolerable Acts also had taxes on numerous items and closed Boston Harbor. The effect of Boston Harbor being closed meant that the colonists could not get goods from over seas and this would impact their quality of life. There was also the Proclamation of 1763 which prohibited colonists from settling west of the Appalachian mountains. The colonists could not avoid taxation. The colonists left Great Britain in search of religious freedom and the opportunity to live where they chose. Britain reluctantly agreed to the expansion to new lands in the what would become North America. However, Britain wanted to remain in control of the colonies with regard to how they are governed and taxed. The colonists, on the other hand, wanted freedom and the opportunity to
"Those who want to reap the benefits of this great nation must bear the fatigue of supporting it" (Thomas Paine). This quote relates to the struggles that the British had to endure while finding solutions for their many dilemmas. In order for the British to have full advantage over the colonial nation, they had to overcome these issues. They figured that they could press the American colonists to help share this burden, which would not only be a solution for their problems, but would also increase their power throughout the country. Therefore, the British desired to tax the American colonists due to the financial consequences of the French and Indian war, to demonstrate sovereignty, and for defense against the French.
Why did the British tax the American Colonists? Adding on to that, the British taxed the American Colonists using many acts such as the stamp act and the sugar act. The reason why Britain was in debt was due to the Seven Years’ War. Britain’s national debt nearly doubled after the Seven Years’ War, from £75 million in 1756 to £133 million in 1763.
1.The colonies did not want to buy british goods so they started to boycott on all of britain 's items. . They were mad about the british taxing them taxing them because the british Were in the war was going on between british and france. the colonies recognized that france was going against the British and the colonies decide to help them. Because they had the same enemy.
The French Indian War forced the British government into debt. After fighting, the British government was in debt and need to get out of debt. Due to this, the British Government had to tax their people. The colonists felt like they were being taxed unfairly.
The debt from this war almost destroyed the British government. It was this debt that caused tensions that led to the Revolutionary War. To recover money spent in the French and Indian War, the British Parliament levied taxes on the colonies. In
These acts taxed simple living necessities at that time such as glass, lead or paint. The colonists were outraged at these taxes. It was very hard to develop a community when the colonists couldn't get the basic materials for surviving. Many people would smuggle these materials to avoid losing the money. There were also many riots due to the anger of the colonists.
The Quartering Act which in my opinion was completely uncalled for stated that if British soldiers needed food or shelter that the colonist had to provide that to them. The Stamp Act in comparison with the Sugar Act also outraged the colonists because they now had to come up with more money to put stamps on almost everything including newspapers and documents. As a result the American Revolution
Britain wanted to punish the entire colony of Massachusetts for the events that had taken place in Boston. Mainly it was a punishment for the Tea Party that took place in December of 1773, where colonists had illegally boarded ships and thrown huge amounts of tea overboard as a protest of the Tea Act. The Intolerable Acts consisted of closing the port of Boston, limiting town meetings to one per year and allowing the quartering of soldiers in colonists’ homes. The closing of the Boston Harbor began to cripple the economy since there was no shipments or trade going in and out of the colony. Secondly, the Parliament claimed that the colony of Massachusetts was having too many town meetings, which led them to restrict the colony to only one town meeting per year.
In document C, John Dickinson explains to his fellow colonists that Parliament never considered imposing taxes in the colonies until the period following the French and Indian War. Document A implies that the reason being was simply because Britain had dug themselves into a pile of debt due to aid from other countries and the expenses of war, and because the British felt that the colonies owed them for enabling them to freely use the Mississippi River, Parliament believed that imposing taxes for revenue from the colonies was just. However, Patriots believed otherwise. Salutary Neglect has been an active law in the colonies since 1696, and up until now they have been perfectly fine not enforcing British acts and policies, but all of a sudden colonists are forced into paying revenue on everything from paper (Townshend Act) to stamps (Stamp Act). Parliament even placed tax on British tea imports.
All people were looking for freedoms, ones not ever having a chance of happening in Great Britain. Men, women, and African Americans were all seeking new and different types of freedoms than those provided in the land they had left or been forced to leave. The colonists had the goals of gaining their rights and freedoms in waging the Revolutionary War they were aiming for a republican political system and leaving behind monarchy systems as they had planned when first coming to the United States. England had called themselves a republic, but the king had so much control it did not fall under the category of a republic. England was a monarchy just as well as France and Spain were and this is exactly what they wanted to avoid in the United States (Document 1).
The taxes that the British imposed on the American colonies were the main reasons why the revolution started and the colonies wanted to become their own nation. Throughout
They also claimed that the colonists were not paying their fair share of the costs associated with the British Empire and that the taxes were necessary to maintain the economic stability of the
The colonists wanted representation when it came down to being taxed, but the British government would not allow it. The government wanted full control over the people, so they made sets of acts and laws that were placed on taxation. For example, the Stamp Acts of 1765. These acts taxed all papers, pamphlets, newspapers, and cards. The Townshend Acts of 1767 were also a large part of taxation.
The French and Indian War was important to the American Revolution because the debt from the war was the reason that Parliament started taxing the colonists. Also, the French and Indian War made Britain very weak, making the colonists’ actions work a whole lot better. Since France was not happy with the outcome of their war with Britain this was a main reasons for France’s interest in helping the now Americans throughout the Revolutionary War, which was very important to the colonies’ victory. The reason why Britain started to tax the colonists was because of the debt resulting from the French and Indian War. The first tax was the the tax on sugar, which was put on the colonists to help pay off the war debt.
The people of America (colonists) were tired of being controlled by England. They wanted to be free and independent. They believed that they were able to control themselves and be their own country. They wanted England to let go of their control and to view them as independent and their own country.
