Harry Truman became the president of the United States of America on April 12, 1945, after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He came into the presidency of a country that was in the middle of a world war against Germany, other European countries, and Japan. With no experience with foreign policy, he was in charge of ending the war as quickly as possible. The war with Germany was nearly over when he became president.
