I personally do not work or have much experience in a large animal practice or dealing with horses, so I am not have any experience dealing with clients wanting to purchase supplements for their horse. However I do think that sometimes there are instances when using supplements can cause more harm than good. In addition, I think that there are sometimes that using supplements wouldn’t really make that much of a difference in the horse and would be a waste of money for the owner.
If a horse is lacking in a certain nutrient, I think the use of supplements could be beneficial. Before an owner starts there horse on any type of supplement, I think it would be beneficial for them to have a full physical exam from the veterinarian so they can ensure that the supplement they want to give to their horse is needed and isn’t going to cause harm.
In the power points it said that 89% of horse supplements are sold through a non veterinary service and that the supplements are poorly regulated. This alone makes me think that horse owners should be better informed about what type of supplements they are giving to their

This is only in cases when the animal needs it for a health issue. For instance, the vets I work with will recommend skin supplements to animals that have chronic skin and coat problems. Another instance when they recommend supplements is if the animal is suffering from certain health conditions, they will recommend different supplements that are designed to help the animal with their condition. I have never encountered an owner wanting a certain supplement for their animal that wasn’t veterinary recommended, so I am not sure what I would do if I found myself in this situation. I would hope I would be able to educate the owner on what was best for their animal, and allow them to see why sometimes providing an animal with something they do not need can cause more harm than
Equestrian sports have been entertaining humans for centuries. Many of these sports have turned fun entertainment into a business. The focus has changed from having fun to making as much money as possible. In every equestrian sport, questionable things are done to train and get horses to their “best” potential. Equestrian sports should have stricter regulations and enforcement in order to ensure and maintain the safety of the horse.
I do agree with the U.S. Federal government’s management plan for wild horses. Based on the reading, the U.S. Federal government had the best interest of wild horses in mind when declaring this act. The act protects horses from humans by making wild horses components of the public land they occupy. The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act prevents humans from slaughtering wild horses. The act also considers the natural behaviors of horses and how these behaviors will affect the longevity of the wild horse population.
While the FSA was testing meat products for any horse meat it has been said a veterinarian drug tested positive for contamination. Despite the scandal growing in Europe U.S officials deny any contamination in their meat products. The scandal has become the next headline and many are raving about it. Many people were furious and felt betrayed that horse meat was in their beef while restaurants such as taco bell promised 100% all natural beef. Many corporations claims
This problem can be seen across the agriculture industry, not just in the equine portion. Millions of animals are in unfit homes with unfit owners that don’t care about the wellbeing of their animals. Sadly, there is no one solution to such an extensive problem, however there are steps that can be taken to reduce this occurrence. Being educated and aware that animal abuse is happening and being able to recognize the signs of it is the first step. Another way to break down this problem is making sure the person who is buying an animal is knowledgeable and prepared to care for that animal.
Thousands of healthy equines are sent to the slaughterhouse every year. Most of these horses can be rehomed. Horses are being slaughtered in increasing numbers and incredibly cruel ways. Many people don’t know much about equine slaughter, my goal is to inform them and make a difference even if it is small. I have two off-the-track thoroughbreds that could have gone to the slaughterhouse if we didn’t give them homes.
The chief executive of Racing Victoria, Bernard Saundry stated, ‘…we are working hard to reduce [risks] further through stricter medication controls, significant investments in improving tracks and training facilities’. However, we are yet to see the results; we still have 13,000 horses dying every year. They certainly have plenty of theoretical ‘solutions’ but fail to follow through with their promises. According to the Australian Rules of Racing, the training of the horses ‘must not compromise their welfare’ but that is exactly what is happening. The horses are being so overworked, that they get injured and are later killed.
The solution is to use fertilitycontrol drugs on mares. Others think it’s a good idea and some are thinking about building more sanctuaries for horses. Horse advocates got made when they heard they sold 1,777 horses to a horse slaughter. The interior department inspector general thinks they sold over the mexican border.
Having a trusted equine vet tech available would be helpful for the well being of the animals. It would also be better than having to take horses into the vet clinic for a licensed veterinarian check out each time there was a problem (WordPress.com,
Every year on the first Saturday of May, thousands of spectators flock to Churchill Downs to witness America’s top thoroughbreds compete in the Kentucky Derby. It is a huge event filled with celebrities, fancy hats, and fast horses. However, behind all the glamour and glitz, horse racing is full of ethical problems. Over the years the issue of animal abuse has been brought up in the discussion of horse racing. Racehorses are frequently injured, and these injuries often lead to death.
Banning Horse Slaughter Horsemeat has been discovered in the U.S food supply, and is dumped on the dinner plates of unsuspecting consumers. Not only do Americans overwhelmingly oppose slaughtering horses, but horses are not raised for food and over the course of their lives they receive a wide variety of drugs and other substances that make their meat tainted. Being sold for slaughter is one of the many challenges horse’s face to merely live their lives free of abuse and suffering. Hope can be found in the homes and hearts of millions of people ready and willing to protect them. Whether you ride horses, own them, or just love them, I urge you to play a part in their protection through adoption, donations, volunteering or advocacy.
The PRCA has been very proactive in establishing rules, regulations and enforcement procedures to govern the care and handling of the livestock. “The PRCA prides itself on implementing the highest standards for treatment of rodeo livestock in the business, as well as encouraging other rodeo associations to adopt similar standards” (PRCA, 2015). The livestock involved in PRCA-sanctioned events are afforded proper care and treatment through a comprehensive, award-winning livestock program and the enforcement of livestock-related rules and

However, these standards can 't possibly reflect the actual nutritional requirements of every domestic animal species. Accordingly, Dr. Junger believes that animals should eat a variety of foods that provide a broad spectrum of natural nutrients. If animals are fed a variety of quality foods to begin with, supplementation with select high quality products can then be used to support good health at different life stages, to prevent age-related deficiencies, or to promote healing after
Documentary Reflection #1 – Food, Inc. Food, Inc. is an incredible account of what really occurs in our food system in the United States. This documentary takes a closer look at the farming industry and unveils a very dark side. It is amazing to think that chickens have been re-engineered to produce more white meat and grow to their full size in 49 days compared to the usual three months. These chickens can barely stand since they cannot hold their own weight and are pumped with antibiotics due to their horrendous living conditions. It just doesn’t seem right.
All animals are different in some way. This could mean tests on animals could be misleading. Certain chemicals could be bad for animals yet good for humans, or vice versa. Animal test are much more expensive than using a human for tests. Humane Society International has compared animal tests with in vitro counterparts.
