“Utopias is that is in contradiction with reality.” Albert Camus. What is a Utopia? A Utopia is a world or society where everything is perfect. Many groups of people have been trying to start utopias for many decades. They are know for working for a short period of time but then begin to fail. Utopias often fail because of two reasons; their rules and their economy.
Utopias are not a productive way to live. For instance, the rules are a large factor for Utopias to become an unpredictable way to live. Having so many rules can create more chaos. To demonstrate, a Utopia called Fruitlands, had a rule that they would all be vegetarians. To illustrate this point, “The group of 11 adults and a small number of children were forbidden to eat meat or any animal product…,” (4 Utopian Communities That Didn’t Pan Out). This rule for Fruitlands became the main reason why it collapsed. Unable to eat any meat products, caused their supply of grains and fruits to run out. Having everyone follow the same rules can cause problems in the economy. For instance, Pullman’s Capitalist Utopia, a failed utopia, had economy problems. These economy problems were created because Pullman had began, “demanding more and more rent to offset company losses, while union sentiment grew among the employee residents,”(4 Utopian Communities That Didn’t Pan out). The citizens that live in Pullman’s Capitalist Utopia got two paychecks, one for rent and one for everything else. The paycheck for rent went right back to Pullman. Pullman began, to demand more and more rent from the people to offset the company losses. This lead to the collapsing of this utopia. This change lead to this Utopias’
(Curtis, 1894, pg. 555). Even though Pullman built company towns for the employees, they were not able to pay rent. Pullman lowered their wages, but did not reduce the price of rent. He wanted them to return six percent on the actual investment, in which he thought it was a reasonable return (Pullman, 1894, pg. 551). The last factor was because of the lack of union recognition.
The goal of such is to create a classless society. There will be no discrimination nor “power” at the top. Everyone works

Zinn’s idea of a Utopian society isn’t completely unreasonable; Zinn provides examples of prior movements that would support his society. He cites the sixties and seventies as a time when the Establishment failed to produce national unity; how there was mass change in things like family, marriage, sex, and other situations that cannot be
The Feast The dictionary definition of the word utopia means an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. It represents a paradise. It is fair to say that every one of us has our own utopia. Whether it is a place where we do not have any essays to write or a place where there is an infinite number of essays to be written is entirely up to you.
Inability to complain about work, low wages, and charge for necessities that they thought should have been provided by Pullman all caused rage in the employees. An economic depression made life more difficult for Pullman’s employees, because They quit their jobs and sought to get fair treatment in the work environment.
All people have different ideas on what they like. If one person chose what utopia they want, not everyone will be happy. Utopia is one way a person sees as perfect, so one person’s utopia could be another person’s dystopia. A lot of stories have attempted utopias, for example Harrison Bergeron, Animal Farm, and even House of the Scorpion.
The Pullman Strike, a rebellion against the big business and monopolization of George Pullman, tested the legal authority the government has over labor unions. In 1800, George Pullman, founder of Pullman’s Palace Car Company, created the town of Pullman, Illinois to house his employees (Bassett, 34). Everything was well in the town of Pullman until an economic depression hit, which resulted in the termination of “two-thirds of its workforce and severely cut wages” (Bassett, 34).
The Pullman breakout was caused by the overwhelming control of the Pullman business. The control of the private business Pullman showed how governmental regulation and intervention was needed. Government interaction between its citizens would help restrict and regulate society, allowing for a better suited society and
As stories of young girls getting their hair ripped out my machines, the lowering of wages, and monopolies stirred amongst laborers, strikes rose. Ones such as the Pullman strike arose because George Pullman lowered wages, but court injunctions forced laborers to continue to
But what is a Utopia exactly? The term “Utopia” was first coined from a man named Thomas More around 1516 as it bears the same name of his novel.
As a counterpart of Utopia, there’s Dystopia or anti-utopia which is the ultimately flawed world. The Word dystopia was first used in 1868 by John Stuart Mill in a parliamentary speech to describe the opposite of a Utopia. This form of literature was created by writers to parodies and subverts the utopian tradition also it is used as a warning against things which are happening in the contemporary society. Ferns states in Narrating Utopia: "Rather than liberating humanity from the constraints imposed by nature, technology becomes the instrument for the imposition of a far more rigorous tyranny—a tyranny of purely human agency. "The central fears in Dystopias are: first, the idea of totalitarianism, second, the invasion of technological progress
George Pullman, and other employers, controlled their employees and did not care if the wage was too low or the working conditions weren’t safe. George Pullman controlled a company that manufactured sleeping cars for trains and operated them under contract to the railroads. He created Pullman City to house his employees; it was a three thousand acre plot of land south of Chicago in the area of 114th Street and Cottage Grove. His employees were required to live in Pullman City. He made the clergy pay rent to use the church, and he charged money for use of the library.

Who can really say what a Utopian society is and what it entails. But let’s be honest here there is no such thing as a perfect country, and America is nothing close to perfect. Now there may be multiple countries below us in education and death rate but that doesn’t make us an exceptional country by any means. To start off America is in 20 Trillion dollars in debt, We are in deepest debt in out of all the countries the world. All we do is spend and there is nothing being done about it.
