Failure and Success “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts” (Churchill). Failure is defined as the unsuccessful attempt for success. An abundance of our world’s population will experience failure at some point in their life. However, it depends upon how each individual chooses to respond to failure, that will decide their path in success. Failure is the key to success because it is the motivating factor for how one learns to succeed. Admittedly, even though failure is a learning process, one could argue that it does not help in achieving success, because it takes away an individual’s motivation and does not provide forward motion in the process. In the article, “Why Failure is Good for Success” by Pauline Estrem, she highlights the experiences with failure from some of the most successful people in history to this day. “Thomas Edison, whose most memorable invention was the light bulb, which purportedly took him 1,000 tries before he developed a successful prototype” (Estrem). Thomas Edison is an inventor, well known for his inventions such as the light bulb. It took Edison several attempts to craft and perfect the light bulb, failing time and time again. Eventually, all of his failed attempts led him to the one method that proved to be successful. Furthermore, failure is often referred to as the stepping stone to success. It allows a person to get their feet wet with experience before diving into the depths of success. In the article “How to Use Failure to Succeed” by Daniel Wood, he comments on the fact that some people are afraid of failing. “Most people are afraid of failure. Some so afraid that they can’t attempt anything that involves the risk of failure” (Wood). Being afraid of failing, blocks an individual from moving forward in progress. This is a common misconception of failure, believing that it will prevent you from ever succeeding. However, we must push aside such a fear caused by preconceptions and take the chances that we are able to. Daniel Wood also explains how if we want to succeed, we have to be willing to push the limits. “If you want to succeed you have to be willing to do something extra. To go beyond the regular restraints and do more. You have to have the guts to pick yourself up after you fall and try again” (Wood). Having the courage to chase success even during failure is vital.
