All I can give you is dreams, Ashes. But one good dream is worth a thousand flashlights batteries.”(Pfeffer 1). This shows that he is more supportive of her because he tells her to do good all the time, so she might think that helping her dad’s financial situation is a good thing to do.”You have flair , Ashes, Style. You’re sure to make your mark. Last week he’d told me to be a astronaut. the week before that, the CEO of a Fortune 500 corporation. And the week before that he’d been stunned by my spirituality.”(Pfeffer 2).The author illustrates that her father is supportive of her in this quote. Some reasoning is that he is giving her hopes to do big things even though she won’t be an astronaut or a CEO he is being supportive of her and giving her hopes. The author claims that her father thinks of her as a special girl and that's why he is supportive of her.”I wouldn’t have any other dad. I told him”....”You’re the special one, Ashes. You’re the one-in-a-million girl.”(Pfeffer 2). This shows that her dad is supportive of her because he says that she is a one-in-a-million girl and she also says that she wouldn't want any other dad beside …show more content…
The author claims that her father will pay back the money and her mother will not find out. This quote shows that Ashes thinks that she is only borrowing the money and that she will get it back on Friday. The author also reveals that that her father will take the blame if her mother finds out.”That’s a lot of money. What if Mom finds out? It’s me she’d be angry at,”.(Pfeffer 4). This shows that Ashes thinks she will get away with it because her father said that he will take the blame.Lastly the author reasons that Ashes will no get in trouble because her father makes a scheme to take the money.”Just in case she gets home early, he said. I don’t want her to see me waiting. You go up the apartment, he said. Take the money, and come right down. Then I’ll drop you off in front of her place, like always”...”What do I do if Mom’s already there? I asked. Just stay where you are, he said If you’re not back here in ten minutes, I’ll go home.”(Pfeffer 4). This shows that even if she took the money that she will look less suspicious because they made a elaborate plan that even has a back up to
Ashes Common Assessment “Never put your child in a place to where they have to pick which parent to love.” Don’t ever do this because it puts your child in very hard situation. They might think that if they do something for one parent the other parent might get mad at them. It’s just like this story “Ashes.” Ashleigh took the money because her dad isn’t very wealthy and he needed the money, she’s closer to her dad then her mother, she felt sorry for her dad.
Ashleigh wants to make her dad happy. He is always nice to her and she wants to return the favor like when he said “‘You get more and more beautiful.’” (pg 2).
Ashleigh’s dad needs the 200 dollars of emergency money to invest in a suspicious deal to become wealthier. Ashleigh didn’t steal her mom’s emergency money because she knows her mom is correct in saying that her dad is untrustworthy; she has had many opportunities to steal the money before, but never has, and Ashleigh knows her dad is using the money for dubious purposes.
Sometimes you have to choose between two people you love. This was the case for Ashleigh in the story,”Ashes”. Ashleigh lives with her mom because a few years back her parents got a divorce. Her father owes a lot of money and isn’t doing so good, so he wants Ashleigh to take her mother's safe emergency money. She has no clue know what to do.
District Common Assessment Essay If your father desperately needed to borrow two hundred dollars from you to pay back a loan, would you give it to him? This question is explored in the short fictional story written by Susan Beth Pfeffer called “Ashes” with a main character named Ashleigh. The story points towards Ashleigh giving her father the money because she looks up to him, loves him and she believes that he would never do anything to hurt her or get her in trouble.
This quote shows that her mom is not only caring but she knows the limit in which Ashley can handle her emotions. Although help was available, she decided to keep her feelings to herself which resulted in a mental breakdown that mentally left a permanent scar throughout her whole life. This reminds of an old friend of mine that had experienced their parents passing away, she also had available help to talk about but decided to bottle those feelings up just as Ashley did. This also resulted in the mental breakdown for my friend which also changed her life in several different ways. This really conveys the importance of reaching out to others about your issues rather than bottling them up to eventually release all at
As she lifted the lid she knew it was wrong as to what her father had asked in favor for her to do. At dinner her father said “ Your mother would never know the difference.” While at dinner that night Ashleighs dad was trying to convince Ashleigh to take the money he was like owning up to her and being all sweet, you could tell he wanted something. And lastly “With mom there are a lot of rainy days and she takes a grim sort of pleasure in being ready for them.” Ashleighs mom is mad quite a bit, but Ashleigh still looks up to her, but if she were to take the money and her mom would find out, her mom would be furious, so it's just best to not take the money and just make her dad come up with it himself, to tell him
Her Dad needs money to start his business, about two hundred dollars, but he also owes other people two hundred dollars, people that could hurt him if he didn’t pay the money, “I had no idea where Dad thought he could get two hundred dollars…”(Pfeffer 3), “ You owe them two hundred dollars? I asked, trying to keep the panic out of my voice.” (Pfeffer 3) The author shows the panic and the urge that Ashes needs to help her Dad as soon as possible. “Can I help?
Hearing her dad say that gives her a sense of security knowing that the money will eventually make its way back to the teacup safe and sound. Ashleigh also trusts her dad because in the story he said, “It’s me she’d be angry at.” (Pfeffer 4) This led

District Common Assessment “I could hear my father's car keening in the distance .”You're one in a million,it cried” (1). This statement shows Ashleigh’s love for her father. Her parents are divorced and her father is an outgoing man and her mother as it said in the story “is as straight as a yardstick “. As you can see they are very different and her dad needs a little bit of help. The father needs to take money from her mother and Ashleigh is the only one who can do it.
Ashes’ father is basically implying that he made a bet with someone and he has not paid them back. Typically when that happens, you are probably in trouble. Not only is Ashes’ dad putting her in trouble, he is lying to her face about it in the first

In “Only Daughter” by Sandra Cisneros, she describes a series of events throughout her life that all relate to her relationship with her father. Cisneros begins her story by talking about how she was seen as “only a daughter”. She then transitions to talking about her education and her father’s opinion on what it is for and worth. Cisneros then ends it with a conclusion between her and her father which involved one of her stories. Throughout the story, Cisneros talks about what she believed her father thought about her and her career choices, and they turn out to be a bit different than what she thought.
This summary of him, along with the fact that his love levels towards his daughter are not mentioned, give the feeling that he either is not very concerned with the well-being of the girl or is just unaware of her situation, too preoccupied with his own life. Either or, it is certainly not helping her case. Lastly, Karr details her/the narrator’s relationship with the girl, which goes as follows, “I was the facile friend of friends insisting on a hug / Who hadn’t been along for years of doctors, wards, / And protocols. I forced her sadness close”. This displays that she acknowledges the girl’s melancholy and really wants to assist her, but in her attempt to help is in a way invalidating her, and making her issues seem like they are easy and have a just as simple solution.
