In the town of Salem the people believed in witchcraft and their imagination perhaps went wild, when they thought that witchcraft can cause chaos in their town. It spreads like an infection, burrowing into every facet of their lives. They need a scapegoat, someone to blame.” This was seen in the play The Crucible, and many events in history after the Salem Witch Trials. The Red Scare during the Cold War, the thought of communism rising in the United States was a real threat to people of the early 1950s. Then we can see it In the United States during World War 2 we incarcerated Japanese Americans for espionage. We saw it in World War 2, blaming the Jews for all the bad that happened to Germany by Hitler, and for that, he put them in concentration camps. Accusations that are false can destroy many lives, as seen in the Crucible.

Arthur Miller’s inspiration for his play The Crucible resulted from his observation of the repetition of “witch trials" throughout history. All of these witch-hunts, especially the one that occurred in Salem, were bred from the political and social repression present in the communities. This communal repression influenced a hypocritical mindset, which then prompted some individuals to manipulate others’ fear in order to gain a breath of personal freedom. Through comparing the Red Scare to the trials of Salem and analyzing the repetitive nature of these horrific acts, Miller emphasizes the idea that it is human nature for people to turn to the manipulation of fear in order to liberate themselves from their present reality.

The Massachusetts Bay Company in the late 17th century still had not made many scientific discoveries, and so many things were said to be caused by supernatural forces. But, the Puritans sharp religious values also caused them to fear any sign of the devil, including witches. The Crucible by Arthur Miller addresses the overwhelming fear that helped lead to the Salem witch trials. Fear led Salem towards hysteria by swaying people away from admitting the truth, and by forcing people to maintain the hysteria to maintain their reputation.

Fear that spread among a group of people in Salem during the Salem Witch Trials, that event in history is a prime example of Mass Hysteria. In Salem the reason why so many women were killed was because of Mass Hysteria. It caused many people, in Salem during this event to think fast, rash and jump to conclusions. “The Crucible”, a short play dedicated to these events in Salem shows us how hysteria was such a leading cause of why the Witch Trials had even occurred. Reverend Hale, Abigail Williams and Judge Danforth. These three characters can be the most to blame for the cause of the spread and start of hysteria in Salem during the Witch Trials. In these stories, fear is shown a lot there is two stories, the first one is called “Sinner in the hand of a angry god” and the other one “The Crucible”. The fear is very different from one story to the other, but there must be some similarity’s. In “The Crucible” Abigail Williams was caught dancing naked in the woods which raises some question. Everyone is claiming it is witch craft and Abigail doesn’t want anything to come out so she threatens all the girls that were with her at the time of getting caught and tells them she will kill them if they say anything. Fear has effected much of history. Many of these events in history are very similar. One of the biggest examples in history would be The Holocaust. An example would be the Salem witch trails which were depicted in the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The Crucible and The Holocaust are related because one person was to blame for the mass hysteria, there was one person in power, fear was used to control the people and many people were wrongly punished.

Men and women were accused of witchcraft, 19 well respectable people were hung. As we know religion has no place in court, therefore eliminating the conclusion of witchcraft. Leaving us to look for other reasons and motives that appeal to human emotion such a s fear, greed and jealousy. Emotions like this led to the deaths in Salem.

McCarthyism, otherwise known as the Red Scare, began when senator Joseph McCarthy accused anyone who was a left-wing “loyalist” risk of being a communist. The definition of “crucible” - in context to the theme of the play - reads, “a situation of severe trial, or in which different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new.” In The Crucible, many people are tested in scenarios they would never have imagined would happen to them. Many different groups and families are drawn together, whether it’s to fight for one another, or against. As well as coming together, or being torn apart in a time of hysteria, every character’s morals are put to a severe test when truths and lies seep to the surface of their daily lives.

Arthur Miller’s main purpose in writing The Crucible was to show the similarities between the Salem Witch Trials and the McCarthy Trials and to warn against government propaganda. At the time that The Crucible was published, America had a huge fear of communism. Anyone accused of having ties with the communist party was shunned. It much resembled the Salem Witch Trials in how the government, or leader of the time, used fear against the people to gain power. For example, Joseph McCarthy can be compared to Reverend Parris in how they both lead the people into the belief that there were intruders in their mists that had plans to sabotage the community.
