Music and Culture are factors that identify and make up Catalonia today. Some of us may know a lot about Catalan Music and some know nothing at all and that’s the reason I am writing this essay today. In this written piece, I will explore and give you an insight into the development and significance of some popular Catalan music genres in the 20th Century. The genres I will be discussing are: Nova Canco, Catalan rumba and Catalan Rock. Each of these genres have developed and are significant in their own way.
Nova Canco
This genre of music was (and is) significant as to how and why it was formed. It first came to light in 1962. Under the Franco Regime starting in 1936 in Spain, people were restricted as to what they could do as regards being proud and promoting their culture. Franco believed

I feel my question has been answered, as you can see from the above discussion and essay, Different music genres have their relative significance and development. Whether it is the movement of the Nova Canco against the Franco regime, which inspired other regions across Spain to do the same thing, the fact that the gypsies created their own type of music on their own native streets yet eventually the Rumba came to light regardless of the social opinion of the gypsies themselves or the boom of the Catalan rock out of nowhere to a great downfall that was not expected in such a small period of time. These genres of music have had an effect on the culture of Catalonia and the well-being of people that live there. Some of these genres have sparked questions – Is it ok that gypsies are writing and recording songs? Has the surge in Catalan Rock brought back the whole idea of an independent
For this final project, I listened to Emily Tigges and Greg Dobihal’s presentations on their family’s history and musical roots. Greg’s family has Czechoslovakia (father’s side), German (mom’s side), and Dutch (mom’s side) roots. Located in eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic and Slovakia, has very distinct genres of music. The most popular, the polka, is a form of Czech folk and dance music that utilizes a wide range of instruments, including accordions, trumpets, clarinets, tuba, and others. He also noted the important and popularity of Czechoslovakian classical music, citing Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” as an example.
In this light, Tejano music is much more complicated and profound than previously explored, once again, supporting the argument that this music genre is a political
On April 21, 2017, I interviewed one of the Burbank High School Spanish teacher name Mr. Tito Proano. The reason I interview him about mariachi was because he writes and sing Spanish and English music’s and knows about mariachi music too. Instead of singing and writing songs, he plays guitar and drums. Also, he likes to Latin American, English, and rock and roll music. He talked about the mariachi history, root and instrument.
The documentary titled “The Chicano Wave” was very effective in displaying its theme and the goals/intentions it wanted to complete. The main theme one could identify could be the theme of using music in order to express oneself and one’s opinions. This is evident during the civil rights movement when bands, such as Little Joe and the Latinaires, used their music to express their problems with the then-current race issues. But instead of being pessimistic about the situation, they sing songs about being hopeful, while still pushing a specific agenda. But there were still many more singers who sang about their opinions during different eras and about many different issues.
In the article ‘Juanes: Songs of Survival,” the author shows that in troubled times many people put in a big effort to help the troubling situation that is bothering them, such as Juanes did in this article. Juanes was one of the biggest Latin American singers of his time. He won the Latin Grammy’s in 2001 and became a household name. Earlier in Juane’s life he experienced life changing times as his country was in the middle of a civil war. At a young age Juanes’s cousin was kidnapped and later killed.
This lack of broader appreciation could lead us to question the borders we place on others and if it affects situations such as this one. Although she was beloved in San Antonio, Rosita Fernández lacked the world recognition she so truly deserved in that eras tough, masculinist industry of music. The singer’s music can act as a borderland as well. When observing just her music, you will see that Fernández’s music appears to conflict with Chicano musicality. She didn’t seem to be perfectly labeled to just a Mexican musician or a American musician.
The Evolution of music in the 20th Century Music is a living art form, not only is it not static in its production, like a painting which once created is intended to remain the same, but the techniques and styles used to generate music change throughout the course of history as well. Many musical theorists and philosophers have proposed different motivators for the dramatic (as compared to changes in different eras) changes in music that occurred in the 20th century. These motivators include firstly the blending of cultures through migration, both forced and voluntary, represented by the views of George Lipsitz and Iain Chambers in their respective essays “’Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens’: The Class Origins Of Rock and Roll” and “A strategy
The presentation itself had many points about how culture has evolved but societal norms have generally remained the same. People nowadays are still as divided as they were a decade ago. In his music, Olmeca uses his bilingualism to share a view of a struggle that other people may not have thought of. His music takes the two languages in his arsenal and creates an amazing blend that speaks better to the audience. This connects perfectly to Spanish class because in life, everyone is a student, everyone is still learning new things daily.
For a long time in American history, there has been a desire for “Irish” music. What qualifies as “Irish” has been left to interpretation; a concept that will be further explored in this thesis. The first Irish Catholic immigrants in seventeenth century America were, in many cases, indentured servants and treated poorly. The music the Irish brought with them took on romantic associations among the white Anglo-Saxon Protestants (WASP) Americans, as well as among the Irish themselves.

Ritchie Valens identified as a Mexican American, and he was one of the first notable Latino musicians to achieve mainstream recognition. Valens’ Hispanic heritage is evident in his songwriting. His songs often dealt with themes of love and relationships, as well as the struggles and experiences of being a young Mexican American. His most famous song, “La Bamba,” is a traditional Mexican folk song that he changed into a rock and roll hit. It showcased his ability to blend both of his cultures into his music (Morrison).
In this paper I will focus on the personal history of an artist named Selena Quintanilla. She became famous at a young age due to her singer talents. Moreover, her early exposure in the musical world in the band “Los Dinos” was mainly due to the support of her father. Her participation in “Los Dinos” influenced her to continue her passion for music. I chose Selena Quintanilla as the artist that I will write about due to the great impact her music has in society.
From each decade that has passed Chicano, music has taken musical changes and has incorporated this to create their type of sound. The different influences brought about what makes Chicano music its own. It is a musical style with roots in the intercultural conflicts and experiences from Anglos and Mexicans (Ortega). In the end what makes Chicano music different than other types of music is that it has a unique set of sounds, genres, linguistic mixing, poetry and political thought is the fact that this music moves people (Ortega).
This essay analyses Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, and how this minimalistic piece of Steve Reich’s later days proves to be a work of an alternative paradigm to many of his other earlier works. There are several theories that regard where and when the music originated. The historiographers pointed out that there are different periods of music with each period having its own characteristics, its composers, its instruments, its rhythm and significance to the existing music today. The first three periods; Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque are expounded in this essay. The periods span through different times albeit some overlapped one another. The essay also focuses on the common factor that triggered the existence of the music periods and its impacts on each period.
